Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I deleted instead of dropping tables

The scenario (I have Windows Vista 64 Home Premium):

    1. I duplicated some tables
    2. I deleted (not dropped - I know - not good) the original tables
    3. I renamed the duplicated tables with the names of the original tables
    4. Now, things are not acting right. This is something I did before and now I believe that this was the source of all my problems.
    5. I tried dropping the database (not the tables) but I get a popup message saying I con't do that with the version I have. I need the Enterprise version.

Is there any way I can delete the database thru A5V8 that would keep it's (A5V8) brain from getting scrambled? I have tried deleting a database through Window's Explorer before (deleting all the files associated with the database) and that really messed things up! I had to reinstall A5V8!

Is there a place in the Registry where info on A5V8 databases are stored so I can go in and delete the database in the Registry?

    Help, please!

Something missing from the chronology you provided.
If you duplicated the tables (and gave the duplicates temporary names), then
    Deleted the original tables, then
Renamed the duplicate tables with the original tables' names,
    basically, you did NOTHING.
I believe what is missing from this chronology is that you duplicated the tables to a new DB or location. If that's the case, then you know what you have to do.

When duplicating a table there are several checkbox options. Which did you select?

      I tried dropping the database
Not sure what this means. The database is the definition of the whole. I can think of no way to "drop" a database from itself.

Why not create a new directory. Copy all the files from your current directory to the new directory. Start Alpha, create a new database in the new directory. From the control panel add the tables and sets found in the new directory.
      There can be only one.

Re: I deleted instead of dropping tables

        Stan,

If you do a search in the Help file on "Database Explorer" you will see instructions on dropping a database:

        "Remove Database

The Database Explorer will display details about the fields of Tables, Views, and Linked Tables.

To remove a database from the Database Explorer, right click on it and select Remove database from explorer... ." (my comment: I think this might purge reference to this database in the Registry.)

        Gabriel,

I recreated the same database in another directory. When entering a record in the form, everything worked as it is designed to work.

Entering a record in the database that I messed around with (deleting tables, renaming) produces unusual behavior (see image below). In one of my searches on the message board, I came across an old answer from an alpha software employee: "This behavior usually comes from a corrupted file."

I have been through this scenario before after duplicating, deleting, renaming tables. I tried going into Windows Exporer and deleting every file related to that database. I opened A5V8. The database was still listed (I even removed it from that list). I tried to recreate the database in the same directory. Same deal when entering new record. A5V8 even thought there was a table in that directory that did not physically exist. So, I know somewhere in the Registry, Alpha Five keeps all this information that doesn't get purged by simply going into Windows Explorer and deleting the files in that directory or by deleting the name of the database in its own list or even by uninstalling and reinstalling (I don't know what happens when Alpha uninstalls but apparently not much).

Through Stan's suggestion in a previous post of mine, I went into the Registry and tried to delete information related to alpha five. I deleted all A5V8 files on my hard drive (Alpha uninstall didn't even delete that). Only by doing this was I able to successfully reinstall and create a good database. But, I went and did the same stupid thing.

So, this time, I took Stan's suggestion in this message thread and created the same database in a different directory with a different name. I created new tables, field rules, etc. Everything worked. I don't why I didn't think of doing that before. I guess I thought it wouldn't work. Thanks, Stan.

Re: I deleted instead of dropping tables

          Glad you got going again.

I was confused by the "drop" database terminology. Removing a database from the Database Explorer doesn't affect anything other than that listing as far as I can tell.
