Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Running total calculation question

I recently built a data base for formulations that we routinely use. It is based on three tables and linked by the "formula_code". Everything works fine, but I don't know how to create a running total.

    For example A:
    "batch_size" x "ingredient_amount" = "total_ingredient_per_batch". (This part works is fine.)

But I can't create a running total for the "total_ingredient_per_batch".

    Or

What I have is this: What I need is total running amounts:
    25 x 600 = 15000 15000
    25 x 300 = 7500 22500
    25 x 100 = 2500 25000
    25 x 80 = 2000 27000
    ------
    27500

    Can you please help me?

    Thanks,
    David

    Re: Running total calculation question

I think the reason you are not getting any help on this is because you need to provide much more detail on what you are trying to do and how, in the application (tables, fields, reports, field rules or ????) you are trying to do it. Posting a small sample database might be ideal, but in any case without more context/detail I don't think anyone is going to be able to help.

Thank you... I also thought about that when I posted. I am trying to do a screen capture but my program isn't cooperating with me. If it would help, I'd be willing to send the program the database to anyone willing to look at it. In the mean time, as suggested, I was able to build a report and get the calculated info that way. It's not ideal but it works. I'm thankful for this forum and glad there are those willing to help.
      Thanks,
      David

Please see the following link for a screen shot of my database and let me know if this help you to make sense of what I'm trying to accomplish...

        Thanks,

          Re: Running total calculation question

          Hi Guys
I would also like to know how.

I tried a while ago to display, on customer statement of account, a "balance" column to contain a running total of invoices less payments amount per line displaying total due after each transaction. Bank statements appear that way.
I must admit I gave up, intending to get back to it.

What is required is a calculated field column, that adds the previous displayed line running total plus the current line value (OR the total of a field from top to the current line*)
You can easily to a calculation to include any value on the current record but not from previous records.

You cant do this in the table because you don't always view all records in the same order.

          * possibly, using a ..sum() or ..total() function ;-)

            Re: Running total calculation question

running_total is for reports, not forms. You have to do this w. xbasic. There is also the previous() function which might help you.

              Re: Running total calculation question

Thanks Peter, I looked at previous(), it's scope is limited to the current table, or the prime table in a set, that rules it out for embedded browse - unless pre-populating a new field in a transaction table first, which is a consideration.

I would like to test running_total in a report (preview) where can I find reference it?. I cant see in V8 help. It's been around for long time, in a thread circa 2001 you referred to it.
