Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Next to last record

    I am needing to set variables to the next to last record (external table) in a group of records selected by the filter nmed_id=var->vcs_nmed_id where nmed_id is a field in the table and var->vcs_nmed_id is a variable specifying records to choose from.

    I don't find a function for next to last record, but it seems like I should be able to use a combination of bottom_records(2,"c filter") and top_records(1,"c_filter"). Bottom_records() would get the last 2 records, then top_records() would get the top 1 of those 2. To that end I have tried the following, but it doesn't evaluate to logical:

    Code:
    top_records(1,"nmed_id=Var->vcs_nmed_id .and. (bottom_records(2,"nmed_id =Var->vcs_nmed_id")))
    Is there an easier way to do this? or If I'm on the right track, where is my expression going wrong?

    My Alpha5 skills are a little rusty. Any help, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Next to last record

    Hi Bob,
    Are you trying to get a particular record for a script in a form first? Or apart from the form? Because if you are in a form it should be fairly easy to fetch the record you want and then pass its keyvalue or record number to your filter.

      Hi Robin,

      The record I need is in a separate table apart from the form. I need to check the external table for records matching the filter nmed_id =Var->vcs_nmed_id and then if there is more than one record found I need to assign variables to a couple fields in the next-to-last record found. I'm needing to create a filter to find that next-to-last record.

      Clear as mud?

        I think I got it. Had to use the Operation Query builder then extract this from the xbasic:

        Code:
        top_records(1,\"bottom_records(2,"+chr(92)+"\"(nmed_id=Var->vnNmed_ID)"+chr(92)+"\")\")

          Re: Next to last record

          Correction. Filter should be
          Code:
          top_records(1,"bottom_records(2,\"(nmed_id=Var->vnNmed_ID)\")")

            Actually, it does make more sense now! I guess I missed the 'external table' part. Sorry. I am just trying to get my mind around what you are trying to do here.

              Before I saw your solution, Bob
              I had started to think of a <tbl>.fetch_prev.
              Wouldn't that have worked?

                Hi Ray,

                Thanks for your comment. Don't know if tbl.fetch_prev would have worked or not.

                The Top 1 of the Bottom 2 does work very nicely, though.

                No one has ever called my coding "elegant" before!!!
