Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup for Zip not working

    Is anybody having a problem with their zip code lookup function? I've created a small table with a few simple fields
    Name, Address1, City, State, Zip & Phone All are set as character fields. Within the field rules for the Zip I extended the field type as a calculated field, and for the expression I wrote USPS_ZIPCODE_LOOKUP(ADDRESS1,CITY,STATE). When I open and enter information into the records, the Zip field remains blank. What am I doing wrong? I have internet access with the computer I run my desktop AlphaV8 on but was wondering if I need to tell my Alpha program to turn the internet on.
    Attached should be my Zipped file for a simple Zipcode Table.

    Re: Lookup for Zip not working

    I tried changing the Extended Field Type from "Calculated" to "User Entered" and moved the expression for my zipcode lookup into the Data Entry Tab where I choose from the Default Mode "Simple Default Expression" and entered my expression in the box below. Still ........ no luck.

        Re: Lookup for Zip not working

        I found turbojack’s post to the Thread called USPS function working? with an apparent fix to the zipcode lookup problem. I was hoping his Code would be my cure for my broken lookup. What I tried to do was make a test table with the fields ADDRESS 20 C, CITY C 15, STATE C 2 and ZIP 10 C.
        From the control panel, I choose the Code Tab, selected New, selected Function, named the new function USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2, left the Return Type as Character, clicked the X button and cut and pasted turbojack’s code as follows:

        function USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2 AS C (address AS C, city AS C, state AS C )
        dim Response as c = ""
        dim ResponseTimeout as n = 30000 '30 seconds
        dim WebURI as c
        WebURI= "https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupResultsAction!input.action?resultMode=0&address1="
        WebURI = WebURI+alltrim(address)+"&city="+alltrim(city)+"&state="+alltrim(state)

        Response = http_post_page2(WebURI,"",.f.,ResponseTimeout)

        dim vczip as c
        dim vplus4 as c
        vczip = extract_string(Response,"<span class=\"zip\" style=\"\">","</span>")
        vplus4 = extract_string(Response,"<span class=\"zip4\">","</span>")

        if vczip = ""
        USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2= ""
        else
        if vplus4 = ""
        USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2= vczip
        else
        USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2= vczip+"-"+vplus4
        end if
        end if
        END FUNCTION

        Saved it … Returned to the Tables/Set tab and tried to set the field rule for my ZIP field.
        I Left Field Types as User Entered
        Under Data Entry I tried to set the Default Mode to Simple Default Expression with the Default Value reading USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2 when trying to leave the Default Value box a warning message appears saying “The equation must return a character string” then after trying to “X” out of the field rules window another pop up warning with a different message appears “No such field >USPS_ZIPCODE_LOOKUP2”. Is there a fix for my problem?
