Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Date problem, Please help

I am trying to create an expression which will give me the amount of working days
for any given month. We do not work Sundays. How would I return total days in the month less the Sundays? thank you

  • #2
    RE: Date problem, Please help

The following grid shows the number of Sundays in a month that has 28, 29, 30 and 31 days depending which day of the week the first day of the month falls on.

    Days
    In 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Month Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
    ----- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
    28 4 4 4 4 4 4 4
    29 5 4 4 4 4 4 4
    30 5 5 4 4 4 4 4
    31 5 5 4 4 4 4 5

The vertical/horizontal combinations that contain 5 Sundays are 291, 301, 302, 311, 312 and 317. All other combinations contain 4 Sundays. Notice that all months with 28 days (Feb non leap year) always contain 4 Sundays.

I created a small database and created the following calculated field expression to determine the number of Sundays using the value of the DATE field. It calculates the number of days in the month and concatenates to that value the numerical value of the day of week that the first day of that month falls on (Sun=1,Mon=2, etc).

    IF(STR(DAY(ADDMONTHS(DATE-DAY(DATE)+1,1)-1),2)+STR(DOW(
    DATE-DAY(DATE)+1),1) $ "291 301 302 311 312 317",5,4)

In the attached app, open the NUMSUN database and look at the calculated field expression for the NUMSUNDAY2 field.

The grid didn't print the way I had intended. Hopefully you can make sense out of it.

        Jay,
Use this zip file, not the previous one.
I added the NUMSUNDAY2 field to the NUMSUN database after I created the first zip file.

mind, I need to take it one step further and ask you this.
                1. now with your help, I have the ability to find working days in the
                month.
2.if i post a date of 5/10/2002, my new calculated field now shows the
working days in the month based on the 5/10/2002. how can i calculate
which workin day of the month this is? example= 30 days in month-4
sundays=26 working days. 5/10/2002 is the ? working day of this month.

                  RE: Date problem, Please help

The logic for the following code is:
                  1. DOW for 05-10-2002 is a 6 (Friday)

                  2. 05-10-2002 minus 6 days is 05-04-2002 plus 1 = 05-05-2002 which is the previous Sunday.

                  3. DAY for 05-05-2002 is 5

                  4. CEILING of 5 / 7 days in a week = 1

                  5. 1 Sunday has passed as of 05-10-2002.

                  6. DAY for 05-10-2002 is 10

                  7. 10 minus 1 passed Sunday = 9

                  8. 05-10-2002 is the 9th working day of May 2002

The following calculated field expression is for the NUMWORK->WORKDAYS field in the attached zip file.

                  IF(DAY(DATE)

The expression got truncated in my last post.
I'll break the expression up into 3 lines.

                    IF(DAY(DATE)
