Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    LAN adapter malfunction

After using V4 for many years on a network connected machine without problems, I have tried to install it on a new stand alone machine. It seems to install OK, but when I try running it I get the message "LAN Adapter malfunction - please reboot".
"Retry" doesn't change anything, both "Continue" and "Abort to DOS" abort to DOS. I am retired and using a single data base for a hobby application, so upgrading isn't an option. Any suggestions?

      RE: LAN adapter malfunction

We're having a similar problem, which has crippled a well-established database system that's critical to our department, and which appeared the DAY WE SWITCHED FROM TOKEN-RING TO ETHERNET.

I followed the link you suggested, but wasn't able to utilize the advice. Probably because we're under WIN 2000 instead of W98, all of the info on the Control Panel was different. I mucked around every setting I could find and couldn't find anything about NETBEUI, nor anything about adding a protocol. Every possible proctol seemed to be there - MS and Novell (we're on a NetWare network, by the way); IP and IPX, etc.

      Here's our Problem:

We can no longer start Alpha 4 AT ALL, either on the local drive nor on the Network drive on the main machines we use it on. All we get is the LAN adapter malfunction message.

We tried physically removing the old Token Ring cards and removing them from Device Manager, uninstalling them, etc. (done in the right order, according to our Network Admin.). No help.

      But here's a clue:

We have one networked Win 98 machine around and Alpha still starts on that machine, even after the conversion to fast ethernet.

Any suggestions or input would be MUCHLY appreciated.

In a way you are lucky. If you are using alpha 4 v6 with win2000 on the local machines it will corrupt the files, definitely on reconfigure dbf and perhaps at other times. Either upgrade to v7 or don't use win2000.

As for the problem I have no idea. We run V6 on win 98se, fast ethernet nt network with no problems.

We used to be on novell and if I recall correctly IPX gave us no problems either.

do you have more details? Version of novell? etc.If you have a newer version of novell running on TCP/ip you may have to use netbeui or netbios (with win 98). Right click on network neighborhood, properties. see if either of these protocols is there. If not click on add, then protocols and add netbeui.

Thanks for the reply, but I am trying to use a single-user installation on a machine that is not connected to a network, and has no network software installed. The original use of the disks was on a Novel network, but my retirement and the company's abandonment of the line of business using Alpha 4 were simultaneous, so I took the disks with me.

Do a search on "adapter" or "lan error" and look through those posts. There are many suggestions to try.
