Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field won't increment from 9999 to 10000

I have a field which used to have 4 digits, and has been eduted to 5 digits.
It auto-increments to add 1 for each new record.
When it reached 9999, it would not go to 10000.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm desperate! Thanks!

    Lane:

    This might be over-simplification but...

If the table field's length was increased to 5 digits but the FORM FIELD'S FORMAT still says '4', you'll have the problem. It this the case?

Does the default table and default form increment to the 10000? If these both do, the problem is, of course, in the FORM for that field.

Try all that - yo might like it.

Ken - Thanks for the reply - I'm not sure what you mean,
      though...
the form has the field on it with 5 digits...
Is there another place I have to look?

I'll get in there and try to see if I can
      straighten it out....

Can you give me any more specifics?

I think what Ken is saying is,if you have reconfigured the database to accept the five digits, ensure that the form will display five digits. On the other hand, if you have changed the form to display five digits, this will not work unless you have reconfigured the database to accept five digits.

If none of the above works, try re-evaluating any field rules and update the indexes.

        Best of luck,
        Keith

We don't know your experience level here so excuse me if I'm trite. With the form in edit mode place your cursor on the problem field and do ALT-O [not zero] and make sure the 'len' column says (at least) 5 and that the "Window' column says 5.

Again, will the field increment properly in browse mode?

After supper I built a test db and have the following solution. I've figured out that the involved field is character and I also assume that Alpha is giving an error message "Error incrementing [fieldname]".

Here's what you need to do.
            1. Go to field rules and knock off auto increment and save it.
            2. Go to global update and update that field with the following.....
NAME OF FIELD COLUMN EXPRESSION COLUMN
            YOURFIELDNAME "0"+YOURFIELDNAME

Test this with F7 and the last record should show 09999. Run the update. Now all of the entries have a leading zero.

            3. Go back to field rules and set autoincrement again and save it. Now, at record 09999 when you press 'E'nter you'll see that it's properly incrementing.

I have a sold application out there that I must do this to about every third year. The guy generates 10,000 invoices each year. Nice maintenance money.

              Lane,

You say the field will not increment from 9999 to 10000.

Did you format the field to display the number as 9,999 to 10,000.

If so, you will have to make the field six digits long, not five. The comma takes up one space.
