Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha4V6 Found Record is out of Range

Okay, first of all, I have to say that I am a newbe to alpha. So this question may be very basic for all of you.

When I print out reports and try to locate a record which was printed on the report I get a "Warning, found record is out of range" prompt.

I update my indexes and still cannot access the records which are printed on the report. However, if I go to a different computer, I have no problem accessing or finding the records.

If I run the report on the "working computer," then, once again I cannot find or access the records.

Like I said, I am sure this is very basic, but your help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    John:

You're 'stuck' in a range. Go to the form in question and hold [ALT] and press [F10] enough times to get to the Alpha 4 main menu (not the application menu).

Press 'I' -Indexes and Ranges then 'R' for ranges. See what's there and it's probably a range with a filter of some sort. Press [F7] and select '0'(zero) for default range.

Now press [F2] and select the Index you want. Apparently the report is based on a range and the script is not resetting the db to a 'show all' state. You might have to check the script that starts the print job.

    That should do it.

If problem repeats floowing the next print, post the script that starts the print job and I'll look it over.

      Thanks Ken,

That seemed to do the trick.

        John:

Did you look at the script [or macro] that calls the print? Unless this is corrected this may rear its ugly head again.

          Ken,

I am not sure how to do that.

            John:

I would be difficult to direct you without knowing how your application is set up. For instance, if you're working from other than the Alpha4 'Main Menu', i.e. you're in an Application Menu, it would be the script attached to that application's button to start the process. Can you search the Dos area for the startup batch file that starts your program. In W98, right click the Icon you use to start and choose 'Properties' from the menu that drops. If the 'Target' window displays anything other than 'A4.bat' or 'Alpha.exe' at the far-right, you're probably in a home-made applicaton.

            Can't tell from here.
