Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 2000 (definitive)

    Hi,

I have scanned through the archives for references to A4 and Win 2k. It looks like a bit of a mixed bag.

Is there a definitive list of do's and dont's anywhere.

Basically, we have a win98 pc with some shared resourced, with about 25 win98 pc's looking at its folders (running A4v6) we are upgrading and would like to try win2k on the server. Would this be advisable?, what about the file corruption issues, is this still the case?

Is there anyone with a similar setup, are you happy/sad?

    Thanks,

    RE: Windows 2000 (definitive)

    Hi Chris,

I have been running A4V6 under Windows 2000 for about a year now. The computer is networked to several others, each of which runs Windows NT. I have had no operational problems what-so-ever. I routinely access A4V6 on the other computers with no problems. A resident A4V6 program also works well.

I did have two problems on start up however. I could not load A4V6 onto Win2K from the floppy disks. After many fruitless attempts, I finally copied a previously loaded version from one of the NT machines onto the 2K machine and that has worked just fine. The other problem I had was an inability to get the program to run in full screen mode. This fix is documented somewhere under "please don't laugh" thread. If you can't find it, please send a note and I'll dig up the details.

    Take courage - it works!

Thanks Tom, that is very reasuring.

I remember when this issue first appeared the general opinion was not to touch Win2k or Win Me with a long pointy barge pole, but it looks like things have calmed down abit since then.

Initially we will probably just have the data on the server, but you seem to be saying you even run alpha 4 on it directly! and this definately works ok??

How about the files=250 option in config.sys, do you just change this in the config.nt file that is being talked about?

        Hi Chris,

I neglected to mention that I do not have a true client server setup, but rather five PCs operating on an LAN. One PC serves the purpose of both a workstation and server, but it runs under NT. I routinely access this system from my Win2K workstation.

RE: file=250; yes, simply load that into config.nt.

        Good Luck!

Holler if I can assist further.

          Hi Tom:

I just read the message regarding a4v2 only opening in a 1/2 screen/window. I am having the same problem. I am not a computer techie, just a user of a dos program that I use in my business.
My computer person just upgraded me to win2000 and I can't get the program to open full screen.
I have an (800) number at my office and would appreciate any help.
          My number is (800) 320-6162

Thanking you in advance for any help you can give.

            Hi Lenny,

            1. With your mouse, point to the icon representing A4 and click once with the left mouse button to select it.

            2. Now click on the icon a second time with the right mouse button.

            3. A menu will appear, select "Properties"

            4. A window will appear with several tabs accross the top. Select the tab labeled "Layout".

            5. On both the "Screen buffer size" and the "Window size" set the Width to 80 and the Height to 25.

            6. Push "Apply" at the bottom of this window.

            7. You may also need to select "Lucida Console" under the "Font" tab. I'm not sure that this matters but I've not run a test without it.

            8. Push "Apply" again at the bottom and close the window.

This should do it. Let me know if you run into further problems with this.

            Good Luck!

            Tom

PS: I'm running A4V6 rather than A4V2 so I don't know if the fix will work on the latter.

                RE: Windows 2000 & Alpha 4

I tried to load A4 from floppies on to a W2K system & it wouldn't work. I saw your posting & copied over a directory from a W98 2nd machine & A4 worked. However the screen in windowed mode is minature and the full screen mode is ugly & clipped. I have a Matrox G450 Dula Head monitor card with 2 LCD monitors which is funky anyway. I've been unable to change fonts or anything else to get the screen to an acceptable size. Did you have this problem? Able to solve it?

                  Wayne:

Does your monitor have a sizing utility? If so, remember that Alpha is dos. Open windows to dos by holding the control key while it boots and pick. 'command prompt'.

Perhaps, the monitor will show a ligter shade of black or grey around the frame. Adjust your screen until it's all black by stretching top to bottom and right to left. Save it. This will not affect your Windows graphic screen on nearly all monitors. Alpha is coming up in a window hold ALT and tab [enter] and it will change to full screen. On my machine, it returns to the last screen mode used.

You can, of course, set the properties of the dos window as noted above in this thread.
