Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: report calculation problem

    Peter;
    You will have to try and be a little more specific if you are to obtain any help here. Please try and describe your report, the data types you are using e.g summary calculations, averages, calcualted fields etc. and the format of the report e.g. does it contain detail and summary sections? Does it contain group breaks? What are you reporting and how are you trying to do it?

      RE: report calculation problem

      Thanks for your reply--sorry to be so vague. Starting with the purpose of the data base, it concerns 50 trusts which own a variety of assets. Not all the trusts own the same assets. Each Form concerns a different trust, lists the gross value of the total assets owned by all trusts, and the number of trust owners. It calculates the each trust's share of each asset; gross value / # of trusts. Likewise, so does the Report; column 1 is the trust #; column # 2 is Asset A value / # of trust owners. Rows 1-50 calculate each trust's share of the total of each asset. The report creates a spread sheet where the total value of each trust is calculated in the far right column, and the total value of all trust assets is calculated in the summary field of the last row-column. The problem seems to arise becuause not all trusts own the same assets; i.e. some rows and columns in the Reportfor some trusts are blank or have zeros. So far the only way I have been able to get correct detail and summary field calculations is to use the IF function to define the detail field for any asset which is owned by fewer than all trusts In those cases, the calculated detail field is "if(Asset A value > 0,(Asset A Value / # of trusts),0). Without this definition, for some columns the calculated results in the detail and summary fields are reported as zero or calculated incorrectly--some assets values are not calculated. Also, without this definition, the last row in the last column either reports zero or a miscalculated total value of all assets. There are roughly 20 assets and 6 variations of trust owners and 50 trusts. The calculations of each trusts share should not be that difficult, either in the detail or summary sections, but nevertheless without the IF definition, the Report does not compute. This may be more than you needed or wanted, but it is the only way to explain the situation and problem. Thanks for your help. PFB.

        RE: report calculation problem

        Peter;
        It sounds as though your "IF" statement has solved your problem. Just in case you might not be aware of the facility, in the summary section, summary fields (i.e. averages) can be structured to exclude "0" or "null" values e.g. the average value of Asset A of trusts with Asset A. To do this you go to your report, press F2 (Fields), select "Define Summary Field", select your field, and go over to the 3rd column (called IGNORE). Press F2 (IGNORE MODES) and choose from EMPTY, ZERO, or BOTH. This then gives you your results excluding 0 (if you so wish)

          Thanks, tried your suggestions to calculate row and column "totals" and "grand totals," but did not work; one would hope that the IF function was not necessary, but...

            RE: report calculation problem

            Peter;
            I assure you, if done "properly", they work. We use Alpha4 v6 here in almost all of our work, and create approximately a dozen fairly intensive "one-off" reports using it every month. We are a market research company and use the "exclude null or zero" option in just about every report.

            If you can send me your report without compromising confidentiality, I will be happy to take a look at it and see if I can help.

                I was thinking you would send me the data base/sets with reports electronically. My e-mail address is [email protected]
