Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Are you using Alpha4 to backup? If you are, it will usually tell you the disk is full and to insert a new disk when needed.

        Hi Edgar

Could you give a bit more info. Are you trying to back up to floppies and want to change the ".BCK" extension? Is the back up not always successful?

I backup to floppies but use pkzip. My script for this is quite involved. The reason is portability and the ability to extract the files without requiring A4.

            RE: database backup on floppies

I don't understand. Let A4 do the backup with the *.bck. When you need to restore, restore thru A4, and there are no problems.

              But ....

It is my experience that Alpha Four CANNOT restore a backup that exceeds a sngle floppy.

                  RE: database backup on floppies

                  Thats right.
Some years ago I tried the a4 backup options wiht dbfs larger than a disk and failed. You cannot backup them. Therefore I use an old program from PCTOOLS to store and restore on many disks. Since three years I have no problems with this option. I start the backup daily from a batch file (outside of a4v6).

                    RE: database backup on floppies

I've never had a problem backing up and restoring with more than 1 disk. But, if you don't feel confortable doing that, back up onto the hard drive instead. I normally use A4 back up onto a zip. Or, back up each database separately onto it's own disk. The only thing i found A4 doesn't back up (unless you do a whole directory) is the application files.

                      RE: database backup on floppies

Sue is correct in that "often" there is not a problem when backing up A4 files on to multiple disks. For several years I backed up files across multiple floppies and never thought anything of it. And then one day sometime ago I read on this board about the "problem". Apparently there is a "bug" somewhere in the backup routine (written for Alpha from a long extinct outside vendor)that may (or may not!)cause some data to be lost over multiple disks. If your files are large enough to require multiple floppies, you would be wise to consider another back up method.
