Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Running Alpha4v6 in Windows ME!

      Mike:

Is this a valid command under Win 98 or does this merely replace "files=" as a command. I am asking because I still get occasional crashes with A4v6 running under Win98 SE. Although I keep reading that I should replace and rebuild my field rules one by one, I have found that crashes seem to be related to files or sets with either several indexes or indexes with calculations within them.

Windows ME does not use a DOS config.sys file so this line replaces the files=whatever that used to be in the config.sys file.

It doesn't appear to me that Win me is a good choice for oper sys if using Alpha 4. Microsoft has tried their best to hide DOS and since A4 is a DOS program this can only lead to aggravation. I for one will stay with Win 98 se

RE: Running Alpha4v6 in Windows ME!

Thanks for posting this solution. I recently upgraded from 98se to ME and didn't realize until today, when I started to run an A4 app, that FILES= was not set in CONFIG.SYS. I scratched my head many times as I watched my modified CONFIG.SYS disappear after each reboot. Checking Windows Help did not help since it didn't address the file handle problem or CONFIG.SYS. I didn't realize that ME does not work with CONFIG.SYS, but of course, you have enlightened me. How in the world did you discover the PerVMFiles= command?

Many thanks for saving me tedious additional research, and tail between my legs with clients who will upgrade to WinME.

                  Hi Mike,

Previous to this post, the general feeling was that Alpha 4 would not work under Windows ME. Other posts state that Alpha 4 will not work under Windows 2000.

If I understand you correctly, you are not having any problems running Alpha 4 under ME. No trashing or corruption of databases when reconfiguring, etc.

If that's the case, thank you.

RE: Running Alpha4v6 in Windows ME!

This solution was also a huge Godsend for me also. I can run A4 version 3 now in Windows ME, but unfortunately, I am getting an error the first time I print anything in A4. It says the program performed an illegal operation & will be terminated. When I reopen A4, it will then print without the error, but then my Windows Taskbar locks up regularly, which causes me to have to reboot, and then I get the print error in A4 again. An endless frustrating cycle. The error also states that the program tried to execute an invalid instruction; Fault location: 0028:01C7; Interupts in service: None.
This is a Dell Dimension L566cx system. One of my help screens said to change the files= line in my msconfig Environment tab, but that did not allow A4 to run as your solution had. Dell tried some things that did not solve the problem, and said to try asking you. Thanks for your help.
