Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

View / Browse Layout Selections Problem

ALPHA4V7 sample data bases "VIEW" and "BROWSE" layout selections work fine. What ever layout you select in each is maintained until you change your selection.

When I use my database designed in Alpha4V.2.11 with Alpha4V7. Everything seems to be working except I lose my layout selections when I switch from VIEW directly to BROWSE mode (or BROWSE to VIEW). The BROWSE layout returns to 0-Default Layout. If I re-select a layout for BROWSE, then when I return directly to VIEW Mode, the View Layout selection is lost and has returned to 0-default layout on its own.

If I Return to MAIN MENU each time before switching between BROWSE / VIEW then both maintain the selections I made.

I tried to edit each layout and re-save it in Alpha4V7, but this did not correct the situation.

Does anyone know why the Sample database layouts maintain the selected layouts properly, but my layout selections keep changing to default and what I might be able to do to make it work properly?

RE: View / Browse Layout Selections Problem

    Joe:

I tried to duplicate your problem in my copy of A4V7 and it performs properly. I can't 'come up' from a prior version as I've done that long ago. The only other thing might be a custom menubar whose script to move from browse to view, etc, is messing up.

Have you tried deleting the form and browse and recreating them with A4V7. That's not fun, but maybe it's what you have to do.

    Let us know what happened.

RE: View / Browse Layout Selections Problem

      Joe:

As usual, I needed to read it twice to get the message. I'm guessing a how you're opening these forms and browses. You say..."When I return to the main menu..... it works fine".

Are you returning to the Alpha Main Menu or a Main Menu that you've created in the App. - to make this work right? You must be aware that opening the proper form or browse from your own app menu or custom menubar can be assured by scripting the action.

I can't remember if there were any particular warnings or other things you needed to do to 'jump' from V2 to V6 or V7 to make the changeover work properly. This might have been one of them.

      Wish I could help more.

RE: View / Browse Layout Selections Problem

        Hi Ken,

First, I am only using standard Alpha's Main Menu and Alpha's Menu Bars, no scripts or other things are involved. My database is just a simple database (not a set) with many View Forms & Browse Tables.

I did find that if I created a new View Form or Browse Table from one of my existing forms then Save As..., the problem still exists.

However, if I create a new View Form or Browse Table from the DEFAULT form/table and I had selected a NEW Form/Browse selection in each MODE, the problem seemed to be resolved. If any one selection was from the old group, the problem was present. Which means I would have to recreate all forms from scratch to clear up the problem unless the cause was found and a simpler means was found to correct it.

BUT... Maybe I found a way to let you see the problem yourself if you have access to the sample/tutor files given with A4V7. If so, try this....

        1. Select/Open TUTOR\AVSALES.DBF
        2. In View Mode, select the existing "A" form - Alpha Video Invoice
        3. Press "B" to Browse. Only the Default table exists so Create a new Browse Table making a change that will allow you to see it is the one still selected and save it.

At this point your new Browse Table is selected.

        4. Press V to View the record. (Note, the selected form is still the "A" form.
        5. Now Press B to Browse the records.

NOTE.. IF YOUR'S DID LIKE MINE...YOU ARE BACK IN THE DEFAULT BROWSE TABLE!!
        WHY DID IT SWITCH BACK???

        6. Re-select the New Browse Form you created. Press V to View the record. NOW...Press M to return to Main Menu. Now Press B to Browse the records.

        NOTE.. THE SELECTION HELD!!

        Thanks for your help!
        Joe
