Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Build Modules/Addons

    Hello Guys,
I am really new to alpha as i am evaluating the demo first before i really purchase it.
I wanted to know is there a possiblity of developing the Desktop application package in parts like in ERP there are modules like Accounts, Purchase, Inventory etc.
Is it possible to integrate application like this using alpha and can it be upgraded later whenever some one buys the advance module.
Somthing same lik eAlpha Desktop, Professional, Enterprise, Runtime, Webapplication server which can be upgraded ans and when wanted.
Also the Runtime does it also aply to website build using Alpha5, as the website will be visited by number of persons and a small runtime will not be a working solution for website building applications.
Could someone put some light on this.
    Regards

    Re: Build Modules/Addons

Alpha is a flexible "development environment"... you can design your apps to be modular, and licensed by you to your users, however you like.

Alpha's "runtime" licensing relates to desktop apps you may build and is based on concurrent users of the app's database.

As to the Web, as you point out, Alpha's "runtime" licensing does not apply. Instead, you purchase "WAS" (Web Application Server) licenses, from Alpha, for each Web server on which you/your users deploy your app.

      Re: Build Modules/Addons

      Hello Michael,
I have purchased the Alpha5V8 Enterprise Edition with Runtime version, so i still need to buy the Application server to make webpages (xxx.htm; xxx.php) or its included.
I am sort of bit confused with the versions and variants, i know it helps most of the buyers who dont need the whole bunch of features.
But I found that with this version can develop website without any problem also develop desktop applications and distribute them to my circle.
      I am again getting confused.
Sorry (I or) the question might be stupid but am getting confused as I was evaluating 4 ~5 other applications and have lost the track of which application contained what.
Hope someone can sort my problem.
      Regards

A5 Enterprise provides everything you need to "develop and test" both desktop and Web-based applications.

To "deploy" desktop apps, you/your users will need an appropriate "runtime" license, based on the number of concurrent users of the app.

To "deploy" Web apps, you/your users will need one WAS (i.e. Web application server) license for each Web server upon which your app will be run.

          Re: Build Modules/Addons

          Oops....
Does This means i will have to buy the Application server version of Alpha5 or the Complete Desk top and Web Version.
As i was intending to build PHP pages using mysql as back end and so far i remember the version i purchased is capable of handling this.
Errrr... its getting more complicated than i thought, need to leave all work and start working on Alpha5 to findout will it do what i intend to do.
          Thanks for your Reply.
          Best Wishes

            Re: Build Modules/Addons

The Alpha website explains each product and the separate editions of each. Suggest you read them all in their entirety so that it will all make sense.

            http://www.alphasoftware.com/AlphaFive/#

And then click on the links for the "Guide to ..."

Simply put, Alpha Five Version 8 Enterprise is a product for CREATING (not deploying) both desktop and web applications using the native dbf database format or any SQL databases. You can run your applications on the computer that you install it on as a single user. So this is the perfect developers edition or one user platform.

Now to deploy... On the desktop you require Runtime licenses if you want to deploy on other computers without the ability of accessing the applicaton code. The number of users quoted with the runtime licenses expresses the number of users that can log on to the database concurrently. So, for example, you could create an app and deploy with a 10 user runtime. This would allow the app to be used by up to 10 users. You could then deploy this app to 100 (or however many you want) other installations all with the 10 user limitation without purchasing another license. You could also purchase more of the developers editions which would give you 1 more user for each and allow anyone with it to be able to access and change the apps code.

The WAS (Web Application Server) allows you to install it on ONE server to allow any applicaton that you have created to be accessed by remote users (remote being anything that is not localhost). Your server software and hardware will limit how much access is available to your apps. For each installation of the WAS, you will require another license.

              Hello Guys,
Please let me know is it possible to design a web application using Alpha5 Enterprise version running on a linux server.
As the files has to be .php where as all the webapplication files made using are HTM and .A5W
So how can I make web based applications that will work on Linux server using PHP ???
Does it means i will have to go for a Application Server for every user.
              Regards

                Re: Build Modules/Addons

If you want to build web applications with Alpha, you must purchase the Application Server (otherwise known as WAS) or upload your application to an ISP that supports Alpha's WAS. Of course, this means that it will be hosted on a Windows machine - not Linux.

Your users then just use a web browser from whatever OS they use.

                  Re: Build Modules/Addons

                  Hello Doug,
Thanks for the response I have been digging the forum for these answers.
Actually i am building a software for Estimation espeically for the Machine shops in India, For a small price i want to give a web based solution.
Hosting the application on my home server will not be a viable solution as the cost of internet bandwidth usage is very costly (moreover the connectiity will be a killer) i dont want to give the person a CHEAP solution but a economic solution. I have seen the prices of shared hosting of the prefered Alpha Five hosting solutions they are high and on top of that i also need to buy the WAS from alpha.
The economical start-up solution for me will be get a managed dedicated Windows server and install Alpha Web Server on it.
If the subscription increase i will invest in faster servers, but can i transfer WAS from one srver to another is the question.
My web solution will be really low cost Rs. 60 per month (close to US$ 1.6) i am banking on numbers rather than cost to break even.
Any solutions that you can suggest (apart from increasing the prices as we indians are cost cautious).
I have evaluated the Alpha software after considering lot of other options the one i was also impressed was Windev but the initial cost of Windev was too high for me to work on a Concept like this so i decided to go ahead with alpha (and i am happy i made a good choice) as i am not a programmer but love to work with various concepts where there is a scope for such developments. Alpha provided me what they promise as i am still reading the tutorial but the learning graph is pretty smooth in short i like to work with Alpha, Mr. Richard Rabins promises made in his marketing email are just what i am getting as before Alpha i was planning to go for VB training.
Do you think the mannaged server will work fine as i mentioned above for web based solutions.
                  Looking forward for your response.
                  Regards
                  Vikrant
