Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4V8 crashes when changing record

I have an application that was written back in 1994 and with all the upgrades (currently Version 8) and using OS XP home it has run flawlessly until now.

In View mode using the same FORM we have always used, when you press "C" to make a record change Alpha 4 closes goes back to the Desktop.

If I change Forms and go to the Default Form and then open the record, then immediately close the record, switch back to my Form I can then open the record the program works well until you leave A4. When you reopen A4 you must go through the entire process again.

Attempts to cure for this problem:

    1. I have deleted and rebuilt the form.

    2. I have change the config.nt handles to 175 and matched the config.sys in
C:\Alpha4v8 folder, all to no avail.

    Any ideas??

    Larry

Yesss, the man said cautiously? on 03/05/2008 is what appears in the "Add\Remove program" directory in my Control Panel. Is there somewhere else to look for Windows updates?

I have a similar problem with one of my computers with A4V6 crashing in XP when I activate a script in view mode. I'll check to see if her machine has had the same update.

        Hi Larry,

This situation kind of sounds familiar to me. I believe that I had an occasion to experience similar kind of behavior with a particular form that had a memo field. I believe the cure was an occasional update of all indexes. I do not recall this happening for some time now and I cannot recall what, if any, final cure solved this.

Thank you for the input. Having used this product for going on 15 years I have tried most everything from indexes to rebuild of the DB.

I found the cure for this particular issue so I thought I would share it with you folks. Since it was limited to the Form I used for viewing I simply made a new form from SCRATCH. I had tried the Borrow option previously in the forms generator but I guess that just borrowed what ever was wrong with the original form as well.

The brand new form fixed the problem finally. It does not seem to be related to WINXP at all.
