Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Email issues V8 with XP Pro

I have recently finished upgrading all of my computers in a retail store from Win98 and Dos to new XP Pro machines running A4V8. There were quite a few glitches, but we have managed to work through all of them for the most part. However, we are unable to use any of the Email features in A4V8. We would like to email report based invoices and purchase orders to our suppliers and customers, and this was a major reason why we chose to upgrade to Version 8.

We are using Thunderbird as our email client. External PDF printers show in the Win XP printer folder, and we have set up External PDF printers in A4V8. When trying to print to the External PDF, we can see Winagent turn red on the tool bar, a printer icon appears next to it, and A4 ticks off the records printed, but then nothing happens. I assume that a new email window should pop up at some point, but no. I have tried running full screen, and windowed. Doesn't seem to make any difference. I have tried changing the port that the External PDF is connected to, no change. I have configured the email settings in Winagent, but no change either. There are more details someone will want to know, I am sure, but this explains the essence of my problem.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Email issues V8 with XP Pro

It appears that we may have figured out our email issues after all. We have been using Thunderbird as our email client for some time now, and love the dependability and features that it offers. So, TBird is set as our default email client on all of our office machines on the network. I believe after testing today that A4V8 is unable to recognize TBird as the email client, so the print spool simply goes to a dead end. For now we will set Outlook Express as the default client, and use it only to email from A4, copying the email to ourselves so we can keep a record of it in the Sent items folder in TBird. If anyone has a way to work around this so that A4 will send via Thunderbird, we would greatly appreciate the help.

Re: Email issues V8 with XP Pro

It's been great to write about an issue, and then come back and write the replies to our problem as we figure them out for ourselves. So, we figured out that the reason A4 did not send the email when we used Thunderbird as our email client was that we had not chosen ANY email program as our default email program in Win XP. Once we designated TBird as our default email client, A4 now sends reports through it just fine. The only remaining issue is that when sending as an attached PDF, the default printer is changed automatically by Alpha or by Adobe to the Email External PDF printer, which makes it tough to print anything else unless the user remembers to change it back after emailing the report. I hope this all helps somebody out there besides us.

        Don,
Thanks for posting your solution...so important on this messageboard to have threads (problems) that have solutions as many here rely on this aspect in order to learn or find answers.

Thanks Mike. If we can only figure out how to prevent Acrobat from changing the default printer when we email a report, this issue will be put to bed forever.
