Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Alpha Five Shareware Offering

I have developed a shareware application using Alpha Five. It is named "QwikBak" and it allows anyone to quickly and effectively backup their information and data. It's free for personal non-commercial use what's more.
More details are now on the web site at www.qwikbak.com.

      Brett,

I downloaded QwikBak and ran into a minor problem. When I run Qwik Backup (full), I get an error message saying that 'wzzip.exe' cannot be found. I know that this does not have anything directly to do with QwikBak, but I cannot find wzzip.exe anywhere on the Winzip website, nor did it come with my download of Winzip 9.0 .

Do you have any idea where I can find wzzip.exe so that I can take a look at your program?

      Thanks,

      Dave Jampole

Yes, check out the QwikBak web site at www.qwikbak.com. There is full information there on the requirements for QwikBak. You will need to visit the WinZip web site at www.winzip.com and download a copy of both WinZip and the WinZip command line support add-in.

... and here's the link for the WinZip command support line add-on: http://www.winzip.com/downcl.htm

It's a free but extra download to WinZip.

Thanks for the feedback, Dave. I am going to improve the error message you encountered so it is more specific and more informative. It's a little vague at the moment, I'm sure you will agree!

RE: New Alpha Five Shareware Offering

Interesting. I did not know about AIMS Backup. But I do now. I don't see us as competitors in this market. I have targeted QwikBak to people who want to backup all their own information and data in a comprehensive, quick and easy to use product. There are several components to QwikBak that make it suited to general file backup needs. There is an absolute potpourri of features which I am sure will appeal to many people. And of course it's hard to beat the price! Check it out at my web site: www.qwikbak.com.
I have also provided a great deal of information and free downloads that will help people organize their backups so that they can be done with the least effort and in the least time.
The latest news is that the Sofotex Software site at www.sofotex.com has given QwikBak a 5-star top rating.

And, after reading more about AIMS, I can state the major difference between QwikBak and AIMS Backup is that AIMS is an Alpha Five add-in whereas QwikBak is a general purpose file backup application. QwikBak just happens to use Alpha Five for one of its features, Qwik Edit.

Brett is quite correct. There is no direct completion here. The AIMS Backup routine is designed specifically to backup and restore A5 database files only.

I did the AIMS Backup because I wanted a real fast way to add a backup routine to any application AND make the backup easy for the customer to use without ever needing to set up anything other than selecting a destination folder - and even that is set to a default that works on any app. The latest version even allows them to save it to the CD on XP systems if the automatic CD writer is installed.

The routine can be installed to any A5 application (v5 or v6) and the simple command "bkup_data_zip()" will open the backup dialog. Basically, the installation consists of adding the .aex file to the addins_installed folder and putting the bkup_data_zip() and/or bkup_app_zip() command on a button. (One command backs up all the data files; the other only the application's data dictionary files.)

Oops! That was supposed to be "competition" not "completion."
