Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Logon onto message board.

Many months ago I had no problem logging onto the message board, then suddenly I have to fill in my email address and look up the password every time I want to read the board.
I am using Opera 6.05 as my browser.

Should this be happening? It is a pain to logon every day.

    Steve,

The Message Board uses a cookie to remeber who you are and eliminate the need for you to login each time you visit. I don't know the eaxct timeout of this cookie, but it should be several months. You should delete any alphasoftawre.com cookies and restart your browser. You will be asked to login in again, but that should be the last time for a while.

      Lenny,

There is something else going on and has been for a long time. Unfortunately, the cause has never been fully understood.

I have both IE and Netscape and have used various versions of both and have set both as my default browser and have tried various browser cookie/security settings. However, regardless of the version or browser setting, I must log in every time I use Netscape but, as you said, I don't need to log in for months when using IE.

It's as though Netscape can't read the cookie.

I know there were others with the same issue when this message board was first put into operation and direct contact with the original developer (Jose ??) was not able to resolve the issue - which was the main reason I switched to IE.

I use Netscape 7 and was using 4.x and have not had problems so I don't think it's a generic Netscape problem.

          SUCCESS. It just worked.

However, I thought that yesterday I had deleted the appropriate cookie file and it didn't work. I hope it continues.

I have I.E. 6.0 at home and at work. They both have exactly the same security settings as far as I can tell. At work I always have to logon every single time; at home, never.

I am using Netscape 4.75, and since we got our win2k machines, sporatically, I am requested to log back in. This can happen even when I am in one of the forums trying to go back to the posting list or to the main forum list. For the most part, when I first go to the Alpha forum from my bookmark, I have no problems.

I had the same problem too. I kept trying to get on and even put in the right username and password and it still wouldnt accept it. I have another computer and tried it and got right on. I then went back to my other and tried it and it still wouldnt work. Lo and behold the next day it was ok after not being able to get on for 3 days. WIERD!

I faintly remember something from long ago and I don't know if it still applies, but some browsers had a check box to "Do not accept cookies". Is it possible that the browsers having the problem have this option set?

I didn't mean to imply above that it was a generic Netscape issue. And, at least in my case, it isn't just the cookie setting - my Netscape setting for cookies is "Accept all cookies".

I'm sure there's a setting somewhere that's causing this but I can't find it and the original message board designer couldn't help either.

It's not a big issue to me. I just wanted Lenny to know that there are a few - very few - systems out there that just don't seem to be able to remember this login.

Looking back on this thread it seems I have had success without a hiccup from 11/25/02.

What happened tonight (1/23/03)? I wonder what has changed things. I don't recollect any strange things last night when I logged on, but I got the panel asking me my password tonight.

                        Steve,

This BBS evidently gives out cookies. They have an expiration date. When they expire, you need to renew them by verifying your email & pw.

This happens to all of us every couple of months as far as I know.

                        regards,
                        Melvin

Correct, the cookies have a finite life and when they expire, you need to login again.

                            RE: Logon onto message board.

I use both IE and Netscape 4.79. A daily task to keep the computer running fast is to delete temporary files and cookies in both browsers. Unfortunately this results in having to have to go through the login again on the message board. Yet it is a small price to pay for dumping files which slow down the computer.

IE, in particular, stores HUGE amounts of temporary files which really slows down processors. If you've never deleted these files do it now.

IE: go to Tools == Internet Options

                            Delete Cookies

                            Clear History.

Netscape go to Edit == Preferences

Both Netscape and IE allow you to set a limit for the size of the cache and cookies. Keeping each at 4-8MB should eliminate the need to delete them daily and yet still let you keep the functionality of cookies at this site as well as others.
