Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Consultant needed in Canton, Tx.

I currently support a small business in Canton, Tx. using A4V6, multiuser, but not networked. I just purchased a 3 User pack for A4V7 and intend to install it. Two of the the three computers on the peer-to-peer network are running Win2K and the other is running Win98. The two Win2K users will need simultaneous access to a single database in order to view and enter data while the Win98 user will need only to view data. The current version of A4V6 is not a network version. The upgrade to A4V7 is primarily to head off any problems with corrupting data (not experienced yet) and to network the three systems. I have read considerable bad press on the users forum concerning printing problems with A4V7. I am not necessarily concerned with using Windows printer drivers. The current standard drivers used with A4V6 (also still available in A4V7) will do just fine. Two questions: How should I expect this installation/upgrade to go? And, after I do this upgrade, I will no longer be available to support this company (too busy), so is there anyone in the Canton (East Texas) area, or even perhaps Dallas or Tyler, that can pick up support for these people?

    Mike -

I am in Lewisville, TX, just north of Dallas, about an hour and a half from Canton.

I have been using ALPHA for a long time, but have not used A4 in several years, having gone to A5, and have not used
version 7 at all. I have done some trouble shooting for A4, but no development for it for some time.

I have considerable network experience, am currently maintaining (2) multiple installations of my own appliations. Both are PC setups, one used NT for the server,
the other is a peer to peer with mixed versions - 2K,98,97.

Not having installed or used v7, I cannot honestly tell you how it will go, but have read that the conversion is essentially painless, almost "load and go". The printer driver problems you mentioned are not found just in the A4v7 release, they exist in A5 also, but mostly with certain HP printers. I have found some that the only way I could make them work (with A5) was to create an HPIII driver, and specify it for the reports in A5 but NOT the default printer. This allows the user to continue to use the default for other jobs.

If the help needed is primarily maintenance, rather that
extensive development, and if at least some of the maintenance could be done via PCanywhere or verbally over the phone, I would be available.

If you are interested , you can e-mail me at [email protected], or call me at 972-691-3118.

      Mike,

For some windows printer driver problems in Alpha Four, I've used the windows Default Text Only driver for Alpha Four reports. This avoids the mystery printer problem of some printer drivers seeing the DOS printer control characters as graphics and keeps the printer out of graphics mode which can be slow on some printers.

        Mike,

I don't know if you have found a support solution yet for your network, but I work out of Dallas and have several accounts using A4V6 and A5V4.5. These accounts have been using custom applications I developed for over 5 years. A good deal of the support is provided via modem to minimize travel time here in Dallas.

If I can be of any assistance, let me know. My wife and I have a booth at Canton and are there every month. We could get together at First Monday May 4th or 5th.

            Mike,

I'm just east of Shreveport (in that foreign country called Louisiana) and I have a number of A4V6 applications I support via face-to-face. I have one just outside Houston running on a Win2K network. I don't support the network, just my app. I'd be happy to discuss supporting your application with you, if you'd like. You can contact me at [email protected], or 318.949.4342.

              Richard,

I don't know if your reply was intended only for Larry, or for everyone. Since you posted it on a public bulletin board, instead of sending a private email, I will assume the latter.

Sure, I'd love to see what all the buzz is about! Maybe even make some suggestions, if it's not too late (although I think everyone here would shoot me if I started asking for this 'n' that to be added on).

If this is indeed a public offering, how about making a link available?

              Thanks.

              Yours truly,
