Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DataBase Integrity

Now that I have an application about ready to go, I forgot about an important subject, how do I maintain user database integrity once I release it. I know and you know that fixes and additional features will be required in the very near future. The customer has their data which they are greatly dependant upon. What precautions and application design do I need to think about now before I release an application that can't be changed. Appreciate any guidance and thoughts on the subject.

    Thanks a million.

        RE: DataBase Integrity

        Huh?

I agree that a reply would be more useful if it does more than point out an error. A recommended solution is always helpful. However, in this thread the first two messages were posted by the same user, who discovered the error on his own.

            RE: DataBase Integrity

Unless he is using a different version of the software, this would be the right forum. Even so, some general guidelines for application deployment wouldn't hurt. Don't just chase someone away.

            Guidelines:

            1. Build in Maintenance Routines for the user to perform without your needing to be there. (re-index, pack, compress, table maintenance)

            2. INSURE good backup and restore procedures are in place. Nothing beats having a good backup when things go south.

            3. ALWAYS make sure that you have access to the system as a "super user". Since you developed it, you better be able to get into it.

            4. Remote access is always good. PCanywhere, Citrix, etc. Some way to get to the application for emergency fixes.

These are only a few. I'm sure others would add to the list. I work on site, so I always have access and availability.

            Good lick,

              RE: DataBase Integrity

Guess I don't see the problem.

Sam re-posted the question in the Alpha Five Version Four back in January. Received several responses and suggestions. No one was chased off... Sam simply recognized that he had chosen the wrong forum and left a note, at about the same time he re-posted in the correct forum. -- tom

I was not being nasty, but it did seem like a very general question which would be applicable to any version. And... I should read what I type before I send. (Good LICK????)

                    RE: DataBase Integrity

If it was MY client and MY system, I would forego the freeware and get a real, automated backup system that would run nightly. Freewhare and shareware are great, but when it comes down to having a business depend on their data integrity, go with something that is proven, it will pay for itself the first time a system hiccups.

                      What do you call proven..

all of these can be set for automatic backup, they can make multiple history versions, they are fast, some even have e-mail backup & notification, and scince they use a standard zip format they can be used immediatly in case of failure..

i have had verious frustrations with tape backup / seagate, veritas, colorado, hp, and i have had no problen recovering using one of the above mentioned software some free some not it depends on need they all have different strong points to fit different needs..
