Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Peter,

If it's any consolation, there are many of us in the same boat and no doubt V5 documentation will be much better.

      RE: A5 book for $80.

      1. This thread started with Cal asking who would pay for a book. There are lots (relative to the forum) of affirmatives, but not enough (2000 needed according to Ira) to make it pay.

      2. No one has confessed that they are ACTUALLY working on a book. Is someone doing it in secret? If so, without naming names can the fact of a book, ANY book, even one coming with the new version 5 (last I heard due third quarter, which starts next month!) be admitted?

      3. If no one is saying anything, how cold does a corpse have to be before it gets buried?

      4. OR. I suggested an online reference manual - kinda HTML help file. Presumably this could be done so we could embellish it ourselves... Based on feedback and need, forum advice and tips get linked. Surely some starving dot com refugee could be lured to modest employment as an editor/compiler.

        Hi Stephen
I heard their is one in the works don't want to mention names
because I am sure he has been reading this post and they have not replied probly because they don't want to be pressure but if they see this maybe they will step forward
they are hoping to get the book out this year

I always liked that idea of an HTML book. It could be used on-line or downloaded and used locally. It could also be relatively easily updated/added to and, as you mentioned, have links to other sources of info. Unfortunately, I don't have the time.

Paradox: Anyone with enough free time to do it should probably not be allowed to write the book.

As a for instance of online help, check out MYOB's help.
If you click the "How Do I?" tab you get an overview entry to specific areas, or click the search tab and put in some key words.

What is nice is this is maintained on MYOB's site, so they can keep it current (only one copy to maintain), they have an option to print it out, people can check out features before they even BUY the product. Seems like the ideal solution to me...

I would suspect that there are a few blessed with the prerelease edition that are already working on the PAY FOR book.

I SHALL NOT pay for a book that should come with the program.

In Fact I may reverse an earlier decision to purchase v5 if there is no book.

Fact is I shall NOT PURCHASE without Manuals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep your hair on, Dave. Of course there will be manuals.

But I am not sure if they will be printed - the last few releases were in Word and PDF files, and I printed mine out.

The manuals for Alpha 4 V6 got rave reviews (I went to Alpha 5 from the beginning) so these folks know how to do a good manual. But a good manual is NOT THE SAME as a GOOD BOOK. A good book will expand on the manuals, and are usually written by someone other than the programmers, and will often cover certain areas or applications of the program, rather than cover the entire program, as manuals need to do.

Warning - from comments on this board Alpha 4 was a less complex application than Alpha 5, so the manuals were less complex. Alpha 5 version 5 seems to be increasing the power of the program with a number of new enhancements, which will mean more complexity, which will mean the manuals will be more complex. To counter this, some of the enhancements are directed at making the power easily available, but it will still increase the height of the learning curve.

And then there is this forum, which as you can see is very responsive.

I would much rather have a $150 program with online books with the option of buying additional books in print. I don't want a $150 program that costs $400 because it's packaged with printed manuals.
