Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

There is no network problem, I can transfer files quickly, and I even tried Microsoft Access and it is filtering it fast.

No point in getting upset with someone who knows more than you do Jetson. It's not their fault.

Did you try the shadow on the same computer as the data that I suggested above??

          Ted,
I too have a friend who is disappointed because of members like me, he is threatening to withdraw my subscription to Woman's Weekly but there's nothing wrong with my code, or my network, even Microsoft Access (and my cousin Arnold) can prove it

                Re: Web or Desktop?

If that is using a shadowed copy and runtime, then you need to work on the hardware/protocols. It is one thing to copy files and another to access data with filters/queries.

How did you connect the computers in full detail? I do use a switchbox and cat5 cable.

You said the database was located on a separate Server in your grumbles about network speed. Now it's on the development machine?

                    Re: Web or Desktop?

Ted, I suggested to install runtime and the shadowed app on the computer where his dev is and his appfiles. It was to find out if the lag was still there after eliminating the network all together. It seems it was way faster, so network issues seem the order?

                      Spot on Dave.
The problem I have with this member is that the situation isn't always as stated, the rules change, and there are few replies to suggestions made by others.
There are two threads about speed issues running now from this member.

                        Re: Web or Desktop?

And is there really a reason - a client at the end of all those made replicated up records - or is this a hunt for a non-existent "real" problem face it - a business on a home network ?.

                        IMHO

Get real - a client the size of managing 300 000 records on a two PC peer network, who is sincerely concerned about a minute or so to process.

Whose buying into that? 40 posts - what a waste of resources.
Not an inkling of a contribution to help, or sample of the actual query, code or a specific requirement (despite multiple requests)

I want to run customer facing apps from my office but run a production control app with tablets out at their (noisy) workstations so I can send them next job details and have them tick the box when finished. Should I start out as a desktop or web application? I think I will have to install a WiFi net but don't want to connect to the Internet. What is the A5 web application server? Is this the same as a SQL server or will I have to buy and install that too? Can I put the A5 WAS on the office computer running Windows 7? Any opinions or help much appreciated.
There is a another part of Alpha 5 that very few know exist, mostly because Alpha doesn't promote it as they should. This part allows one to develop on the desktop with web components and it can be a very nice, good looking, quick and dirty way to get an app up and running with lots of features in less time than doing it on just the desktop. The other nice thing about it is that you can use it on the web and there is little to do to convert it. Granted, there are some web design issues that are not A5 but at least you don't have to redo the whole thing.

                            Ken,

The first problem with that is that a w.a.s. license is needed for every install of the full app. Let's see, if it is just one network, it is about 399? but if there are multiples, how much?

The other problem is the extra time it takes to develope.

If it were'nt so expensive, we would probably all go that way. Slowly, of course.

It's no different than the desktop pricing.

Yes/No. Granted, there are a ton of properties in the grids but once you know where they are, it's much more fun to work with. And, at that point, it'll take less time.

Ken, You only have to buy a runtime once and then use it as many times as you want. That is not so with the was.
