Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mass/Batch Updates

    We are seriously considering purchasing Alpha Software, but are having some difficulties getting customer service to respond to our questions, which is a bit disheartening. I have been doing A LOT reading and research on this software and I am quite sure it is going to meet our needs. But do have a couple questions.

    We have built an eTime system for a healthcare staffing company. They mostly staff temp employees and we built an online time system through Caspio. We ran into some roadblocks and are now seeking a new software to move our system over to.

    Our biggest need is to be able to incorporate the ability for users to make mass/batch updates within the system. For example our Accounting department needs to be able to mark over 900 employees as paid each week in the system, and through Caspio, it is painstaking as we have to go through each individual record and select paid, then select update. We just want to be able to do a select all type of option and change the corresponding field to the appropriate value.

    Is this something that is possible through Alpha software. I imagine it is, but I want to be very sure.

    Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Re: Mass/Batch Updates

    If you use Alpha's native tables to store your data you can create an update operation.

    Link to documentation on Update Operation.
    There can be only one.

      Stan is correct if you choose to use .dbfs. But the general recommendation for a web-based app these days is to use an SQL back-end. A5 connects to them very easily.

      Then you just run a simple SQL Update instruction. It's always a little more involved that this no matter what you do, but this can be automated, and finished in about a second.

          Holly,

          Here is an example of updating two fields if the data has a "Y" in the exported field filename. That "Y" was put there when the transaction was finished and then this ran right after the transaction. From a dialog "aftervalidate" event.

          DIM a5_operation_order as C
          a5_operation_order = ""
          query.order = a5_operation_order
          DIM a5_operation_filter as C
          a5_operation_filter = "Transactiondate <= " + quote(currentform.controls.Datethrough)+".and. Exported = ''"
          query.filter = a5_operation_filter
          query.options = "I"
          query.description = "Temporary Query"
          i_indx = a_tbl.query_create("N")

          update.fields = 2
          update.field1 = "EXPORTED"
          update.expr1 = "STRITRAN(EXPORTED,' ',\"Y\")"
          update.field2 = "EXPORTDATE"
          update.expr2 = "date()"
          a_tbl.update()

          a_tbl.close()'If the Operation is run from within a Form or Browse, then refresh the window

          Works whether one record or millions.
          :)
