Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 5 V11 on a portable hard drive...

    Just a thought...

Is it possible to create a mobile version of the current development environment on a portable device?

I suspect not as the .net environment and related registry entries and license details probably restrict you to a fixed environment.

I have a 25 Intenso 250gb device that fits in the pocket, it could serve as a backup for my desktop apps and I could take it anywhere with ease, then just plug it in via the USB port of any available PC and away I go. Well anyway that's the theory, but as I said earlier I don't suppose it is possible at the moment.

Re: Alpha 5 V11 on a portable hard drive...

So far as I know Alpha only needs the .Net framework to run. The framework sits in the Windows folder. The worst case I see happening is that the framework would have to be in stalled on the PC where the portable drive is connected. Since all recent Windows PC have framework you may not have to do anything unless there is a .net version issue.

The bigger issue would be the license verification system Alpha uses. Alpha will be looking for a particular PC name. I recall seeing some posts that there is a work around to this but I don't recall the details.

Easiest way round this Paul is a Netbook. I have a 10" one running a lot of apps.
I use a mini disk which is wallet sized to hold an install version and also the data.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Thanks John. I'll fire an email off to Alpha and see if they know if it is possible. I agree, in theory it should work, but I tried installing the latest alpha on the device in question today and at the end of the install it wanted to repair the .net on the local PC.
        So, more investigation needed.

          Hi Ted,

The point is in my case (as with anything fat finger intensive) mobile/small (even a netbook) is not a productive environment for me. I am so used to two monitors that the minimum I require is one large one. Laptops are OK but I still need a proper mouse and keyboard, it just doesn't do it for me. The one exception is my IPAD which I use a lot with my bluetooth keyboard fpr email and documents. For heaven sakes I only use a mobile for emergencies. I suppose I could screw a door handle into the top of a desktop base and invent the luggable....

Re: Alpha 5 V11 on a portable hard drive...

Well it worked - sort of...

I connected the drive to a laptop W7 without Alpha or .net (at least explicitly) installed and booted up the attached drive's installation of Alpha. After accepting the thirty day trial Alpha complained about settings and informed me that I should exit Alpha and run a settings batch file in the alpha installation directory (two versions one for XP and the other for later OS releases). I did this and discovered that it needed to be run as administrator. After running it complained about certain "codejock" files and I think some other items, but after confirming these errors the batch routine completed.
When I next ran Alpha the same message about settings was displayed but this time I ignored it. There were a few more grumblings from the Alpha software but I continued on and after selecting desktop as my environment I opened up the Alpha Sports database with no problems and ran it OK.
At the moment I have not made any changes or created any new tables, forms, reports, etc. but in theory this approach should (with a little tweaking on Alpha's behalf) work OK... The license issue could be overcome by having a license.txt file in the installation directory similar to the runtime environment.
I will try out the development (desktop, which is what I am interested in) a bit later, but for now I was so stunned I just wanted to post the news.
I haven't contacted Alpha about this yet but intend to after further investigation. I think portable Alpha would be a good selling point for them, even if there may be some limitations in respect of taking advantage of certain advanced features, probably dot net related.

The licence is linked to the computer name.
              (For development, not runtime)

If you use any version of runtime, you just need to have the license.key + run the .net file + run the c++ file + register the files from the batch that is appropriate to the os. You could make a batch file to do all this for you. It would not be too hard for that.

For development, you will have to register the product with alpha and I am pretty sure you are only allowed 2 computer names(the 2 allowed installs) and then it won't register anymore. You could use it for the 30 days trial, I guess, but this may be in violation of the license.

Ray and Dave, thanks for replying. I realise about the license issue. I was hoping that Alpha could see the sales benefit of making the dev environment truly portable. Surely it would not be too onerous to check a dev license in the same way as they check the runtime. In other words the portable version would have to be attached to a PC that is connected to the internet so that they could check the license count.
BTW - What would happen if I had three PCs all with the same name and installed the software on each one with the same license? I suppose if three PCs were in development mode at the same time one would be locked out because Alpha could check the license count over the internet - but if the third PC's internet connection was disabled would the third PC function OK once Alpha had determined that the PC was offline and they would have to give the benefit of the doubt? Just a thought, not suggesting anyone should do this.
