Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mobile development - what others are up to...

With the release of Alpha Anywhere (AA) soon coming I thought it might be interesting to show others are doing. Instant Developer is getting ready to release their v12 as well. In it they have created a new cross platform U/I theme. I thought those interested mobile development may want to take look at what other tools are rolling out for mobile developers and users. For the curious, here is the link.

    http://blog.progamma.com/en/quadro-a...aphical-theme/

If nothing else it gives A5 developers something to compare AA to when it is released. I can understand why developers would like to create apps that look nice and have an appearance that engages the user.

At $3,588USD* per year subscription rate, hope it is really, really good.

*Unlimited project size rate, best comparison to Alpha's offer.

Steve- In.de is really pretty darn good. I am currently developing an app in it now to learn it. At the end I may have a better sense about how it compares to A5. However, that was not the point, the point was seeing what was going on in the mobile dev world. I am just a humble desktop guy though I include browser based desktop app in that category.

What caught my eye, and may be 'old hat' to those in the mobile dev world, was the nice U/I and the tools to create them. I hope AA will enable its developers similarly.

I will say in the sense of fairness and full disclosure here is the full pricing for Instant Developer here is the breakdown http://www.instantdeveloper.com/eng/versions.aspx For a developer like me, a one man shop, the $99 per month .Net works fine. I end up with nice clean C# code that can be edited in Visual Studio, Sharp Develop, etc. because it is a pure C#.Net project. Annually, that cost is $1188. How that compares to Alpha Anywhere is found in their recent promo email, quoting "The current price of an Alpha Subscription is $1600/1 year or $2699/2 years." That saves me over $400. Naturally that does not factor in the promos either company may offer.

Back again to the point, I am hoping we see some similarly nice tools, etc. come out in AA. For those in mobile development they have an opportunity to really develop great U/Is. Should be fun for them.

Actually, the "current price" might not quite cut it in a direct comparison, since I read from the last Alpha Software marketing e-mail:

Once Alpha Anywhere is released, a subscription will be significantly more expensive than our current price of $1699.
The word "significantly" sounds a bit worrying, especially since the subscription is now already a "one offer - all inclusive" subscription offering things you might not need but nevertheless must pay for. Looks like instead of tailoring the offer more to individual developers' needs the most innovative thing marketing wise coming from Alpha is to make the product "significantly more expensive". That worries me for more then one reason.

After looking at demo I didn't see anything that couldn't be done in AA....including look and feel.

Tom - I have not seen AA but I will say that is great news for Alpha developers. The release of AA must be getting close given the types and content of the promo emails coming from Alpha. For those anxious to become more active in the mobile dev world, they must be getting excited about the possibilities...

              John,

From what I have used and seen in AA you will truly be BLOWN away......and I don't say that often about new products.

              Thanks
