Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Subform equivalent

Hi, those of us who came from Access would be familiar with the subform and that you can set the sourceobject property of the subform to display another form/report. Is there an equivalent component in Alpha Anywhere. I don't want another tab in the UI I want to mimic this in Alpha Anywhere. This will be useful in convincing my clients.

    Re: Subform equivalent

Are you referring to desktop or web? Desktop has subforms but they need to be based upon the same table or set as the parent form. Web can have pages in an iframe which mimics a "subform" if you like. Also the UX allows you to also have a "subform" like concept whether using grids or other components. So basically, either way, the answer would be yes.

        Hello Scott,

I suggest you to learn the A5 technology first and view all necessary videos. You need to think in terms of how A5 works and you may not need to use any sub form. See what options A5 can offer you. We need to move on.

Doron is right. Look at the videos - in particular, the v11 videos. You need to do a little research to get a sense for the possibilities.

            Hi Lawrence,

            Welcome fellow Access refugee

Yes, there is the absolutely equivalent of sub forms in the UX
Look for "Embedded Objects" under the "Other Controls" section, You can embed another UX, Grid or even a report.

Yes, it is a long and winding journey transitioning from Access to Alpha I feel like it is 30% learning Alpha and 70% learning the Web World

Feel free to contact me any time as I know the journey you are on and I have been there, done that.

              Hi Scott,

Steve Working created great videos for Alpha Five version 11. It is a great resource to get a head start with Alpha Five. Most of the videos cover just grids.

Thanks Bruce, I will try this. Glad to know that there are other Access guys here making the transition to Alpha Anywere. Once I get to the actual command that will set the equivalent of the " SourceObject" property I should be ok. I will definitely let you know how it goes. Thanks Again.

If it helps Lawrence, I am doing this for a client at the moment, but my background is from the Alpha side and not Access.
When you start to get to grips with AS, try importing the Access tables and running AS and Access side by side to see the possibilities.

You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it is comforting to know that there are so many of you all looking at threads and giving such good technical advice. I will be using the embedded object together with the page layout component to attempt to get the desired effect, I know I will encounter challenges along the way but will let you all know if I succeed. Happy Coding!

Guys, I got it to work! and with out a line code. The embedded objects are hidden and then I fire some Javascript to load the selected embedded object and hide the rest. Now on to my next challenge. Thanks again for all your feedback.
