Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha database software versions

I'm not looking for an application builder but a simple database builder.
Is there a list of legacy versions that points out what platform each runs on and what its primary function is?
    Thanks, all

    #2
Alpha Anywhere is the only version that is currently sold and supported. While functionality has of course grown over time, the primary function has always been a database application development tool/platform.

Previous versions are completely unsupported, have compatibility issues on current operating systems, and may have security exploits. It is strongly recommended not to begin any new work using an older and unsupported version, and to upgrade any existing applications which use older versions as soon as is feasible.

I am still interested in learning which versions run on what platform, and what each version brought to the table. I'm not so concerned with security as any PC that may be used would be air-gapped and stand-alone.

Well if you can't buy the earlier versions, I think you may be wasting your time unless it's simply an academic exercise.
Take a test drive with the Community Version of Alpha.
Oh, and you might want to check your age in your credentials, so people take you seriously.

I'm pretty sure that's a vBulletin bug when a user doesn't specify a date of birth. I too am apparently 1023 years old.

            Yeah, but you wear well!
You don't look 1023. ( might have done once!)

What’s missing here is that this poster appears at least to me to be interested in a simple desktop database builder like Alpha Anywhere developer with DBF file support. He only wants to build database solutions for his own personal use and has no interest in the WEB.

The Community Edition is WEB only with no DBF support. In fact, if one goes to the Alpha Software WEB site, I was unable to find any reference to the Developer or of any solution for a current build of Alpha Anywhere that supports the desktop and DBF files.

Lenny, is Alpha Software trying to shut down any support of the Desktop? I myself have a number of desktop applications running every day. I find it very odd that Alpha Software has chosen not to mention the availability of a desktop solution on their WEB site.

Like you Ron, I have a number of DT applications built around DBF.
I have explored most of the options, and live with it the way it is, except that I sometimes use SQL tables and not necessarily DBF's.
You probably don't need DBF file support if you use SQL Express on your PC, but it does mean learning new skills.

An easy option if you cannot get a Desk Top version - early V12, V11 down - is to use LibreOffice - a free and open source toolkit - a bit like 365, but really free.
You will have to install Java Runtime Environment though as a minimum.
It all works, but nowhere near as slick as an Alpha installation.

                  Hi!

I have the old V10.5, was given V11 files, and can't open them. Can I open these files with Alpha Anywhere? If so, how? Please advise. Thanks.

Hi madtowng! I created an open quote system before in V10, and eventually they migrated to V11. Now, they shared the files in V11, and can't open the adb with my old V10.

Upload the app as a zip here.
You should be able to open it in V10.5, if not, I can possibly convert it from V11.
                        PMsg me if you wish.

They are there Gregg, but in odd places and encrypted for the most part.
It's not an Alpha native application zip, looks like a disparate backup. Stuff in lots of places.
Have asked John if he has anything else up his sleeve, but without a decryption key, I will struggle.
And yes, I tried bypassing the autoexec, but there isn't one.
