Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Need Advice: Dump Office 365 and go back to Office ####?

I don't like this program, its interface in Excel is a pain and it won't let me open 2003 or 2007 XLS files. I am sure there is a way to do so but not without using protected mode.

I've thought about replacing it with Open Office 3.2 (or 4.0?) but can't find info on whether that program will work with AAv12 dbf files or older xls files either.

I've read that Office 2010 is the most stable, but I think the last legacy version is 2013.

Any advice on doing this in the Win 10 environment?

Edit: I can't get Excel to turn off protected mode for my spreadsheets. Which means I can't even print it.

All I know is that in the past, you had to manually delete newer files like mapi32.dll.

The older installer does not overwrite the newer files, and there were conflicts.

I am unsure if they resolved the issues, but I suspect you will have an issue or two...

    Good luck...

Well since I have a subscription for 365, I can always get it back...I'm still waiting for my download link so will check back after the update.

        Thank you Robin
I still use MSOffice 2003 upgraded to 2007 and do have just office 10 for the emails(only)
Was looking at the subscription, but had decided no to.

Libre Office is loaded here and seems to work quite well. Open source and free. Have not tested with alpha so far.

          Hi Dave,
I was able to find a copy of 2007 for $99, but decided to try Libre first - so far, so good. It does not have email however, so I am trying out Pegasus.

Since you have Office 2007 too - will it let you edit, save and print xls files from v 2003? Libre does.

Personally, I think we should rebel against the current subscription model most apps are using whenever possible!

            Yes and office 2000
I agree! Being from SC, I am a natural Rebel and with Flag.

Subscription is a downer to me. I have to subscribe to many apps and addons(about 30 of them) for other in the course of business, but most of them are subscriptions for updates and help only. They still operate fine after they expire.

One may need to understand Joomla to get what I mean. PHP going to version 7 caused many to have to be upgraded and new ones in some cases. Joomla(which is free) is now at 3.6.1 and caused other breaks. Joomla 4 is going to be a huge jump sometime next year and I am sure there will be more upgrades/updates.

I have been using Libre Office. It is a fork of open office that has seen more updates and devolpment. Not quite as stabile as Office 2010 or 2013 but good enough. It will read any of the Office file formats. Believe it will read the DBF files produced by Alpha5, but there are some issues with this.
For a good alternative to Outlook try eM client, connects to every email service out there including exchange server. It's free for for one or two email accounts and full version is a reasonable cost.

LOL eM client sounded good, but running over 30 email accounts from more than that may websites.
It costs 50.00 for more than 2 accounts as I am reading it, Nice to know if I ever have issues with Outlook.

Just thought about it: Wonder how workable alpha desktop would be for that?

Thats why I Am using eMclient numerious website accounts. Not 30 only only around 8 accounts. Still $50 gets you support for unlimited accounts. It does a nice job of filtering and placing all accounts in a single view.

Found a few more as well that are free.
The 30 is the number of sites. emails are closer to 150, but I have most of them forwarded/consolidated on the websites. So I have about 30 direct emails to my outlook.
