Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Search "Help"

    I've always wondered about......

    1. Is there a "Help" for the search feature of the message board?

If not, how does one enter a string of text so as to search for an exact match and not the single words? " at the beginning and end of the text doesn't do it.

    2. When using action scripting, WHY don't the scripts load automaticly? Why must the green + be clicked?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    Hi Ken,

The outer quotes do make it so a search result has to contain the words within---All of the words at least once. What may be confusing is that it will also highlight the individual words as well.

As far as the scripts showing up--the only benefit would be on the initial loading of the editor for Action Scripting...once an AS has been chosen I would NOT want it to do this as what scripts have been used have to be seen before adding more ( at least I Need to be able to see them before deciding on additional scripts!).

Isn't that the whole idea of using the quote marks, so it only finds the exact text? Otherwise, why waste the time using the quotes?

That's what I meant, the AS initial start up. It gives the impression of an incomplete setup, the way AS is initiated. Just appears as if that was overlooked.

And it does ...but it also includes each single word in red as well (unknown as to why the search does this). BUT each search I have done using quotes always has at least ONE time presenting the entire quoted search phrase. Does it not for you??

I understand what you're saying---and never bothered me until now!! Thanks!! :D

This could be placed in the Wishlist Forum.

Sure, but.......why only ONE and then the words one at a time. Seems to me it should show all phrases, not just one. Why would anyone want to locate the phrase "red apples" in only one record and the find 50 records with the word "red" and another 75 with the word "apple"? Looking through 125 additional hits when there were only 5 records containing the phrase "red apples, UGH. The search feature is nearly worthless. I'll be if one added all the "dead" time that was spent searching the message board.....no wait, I could retire a millionaire.

It's no wonder so many posts include the words, "I tried searching but couldn't find anything".

At any rate, the template for this message board is used by many other message boards. I noticed some where the search features are a bit different than Alpha's.

          Thanks for your responses.

Ken---I don't know why we are seeing two completely different things!

Every time I do a search with the search phrase inside of quotes and if I get say 20 results...Every result will have the search phrase in it!

I can use either the search option of Show Threads or the one of Show Posts and I get the entire phrase in each and every thread or each post dependant upon the chosen option.

I always use the Thread option as if my search produced a result then a single post would rarely contain the complete answer I would want. So far I have been able to find answers to well over 90% of all my novice questions simply by using the search of this messageboard...but do have to admit I have had to use every search skill I know of and even have honed them a bit more in order to fully utilize the information held in this board.

Search for "wondered about"--got 28 hits and every thread contained the search phrase.

              Hi Mike,

We are seeing the same thing. It's just that I saw the results it differently. As luck or whatever would have it, I never saw the result I was searching for in the first window of a thread. All I ever saw were the individual words. After reading tour responses, it finally dawned on me what was happening.

So, as it is, the search is sort of working but it adds the individual words as well. Not a big deal but for me, it's a nuisance.

Thanks for your patience and explanations. Perhaps it turned the light on for someone else as well.
