Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there a way select those records or marked them so I can print a report?

Do I need to run this code for each line? I see it is only looking at line1. Can I have it look at all lines (lines1 through 10)?

          Fernando,

I do not know how many records we are talking about. Hundreds, thousands, 10 thousands?

I understand about counting the lines. It seems to me you will have many records with the maximum lines available. Not sure how you will be able to determine a single largest.

Looking at your example, I can’t figure out how you came up with 40 characters. Are you eliminating spaces? Are you adding multiple lines together? If so, which ones?

Using .field_statistics, from the help file:
The <TBL>.FIELD_STATISTICS() method computes statistics (first value, last value, minimum value, count, total, average, standard deviation and variance) for Expression, for all of the currently selected records in the table referenced by <TBL>.

The function will return the “Maximum”, but the function will not tell you which record.

With the information have posted, I’m thinking that I would:
          1. create a temporary table with at least 2 calculated fields to store the number of lines and count the characters for each record
          2. the temp table would contain the fields need to give the results you are looking for.
          3. example: line 1, line 3, line 4, line 5, line 6, line 7, line 8, line 9, line 10, record number or a unique value of some sort, calc->field_line, calc->field_chars
          4. create a script that would step through the sample table writing the contents of the fields you want to the temp table
          5. create a report for the temp table filtered to show the results you are looking for
          6. example: cal->field_lines = 5 .and. cal->field_chars = 40
I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but I would try this approach myself.

            Hello Ronald,

Thanks for the info and sorry for my delayed response. I have returned to this project to see if I can make some headway.

To answer your questions above, our list quantities will vary. Customer mailings will vary anywhere between 1 record to 100,000's of records. And in my example below, I got the maximum number of characters 40 because LINE 8 = "1234567 Any Street, Bldg 456, Ste 987654"
            For example:
Maximum number of lines required is 5 SEE RECORD # 1
Maximum number of characters required is 40 SEE RECORD # 672

            REC#: 1 maximum _LINES
            LINE1 P1 T1********AUTO**MIXED AADC 07099

              Hello all,

Thank you all for your input. I have my report up and running. May not be the conventional way to do it but the results are what I was looking for.

Is there a way to split a table into multiple tables based on a field? For example: I have a table(,dbf) of 1,000 records. In the table there is a field named "Segment" which has 1, 2, 3, or 4. How can I split this into 4 separate tables?

              Thanks!

build a copy operation and filter on the segment value.

Probably or write a loop using the code from an operation as a starter.
