Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Columns based on dates

    I am new to QReportBuilder and have downloaded the 30 day trial
    What I want to do is run a report based on the transactions table in Quickbooks that shows the account name and a column for each month of the year.
    I cannot work out how to insert a new column on a report and then select the amounts based on the date.
    Any help is appreciated - thanks

    Re: Columns based on dates

    Hi David,
    What you will have to do is utilize calculated fields for the amounts for each month. The functions necessary will vary according to what specifically you want to show.

    Ex: for the month of October an expression like--
    Code:
    tablesum("Transaction","cmonth(txndate)=\"October\"","Amount")
    and then similar for each month. You would also most likely need to limit the year as well.

    I suggest if this is too advanced, to come to the free weekly Thursday QReportBuilder webinar where this could be explained perhaps a bit easier (the link in my signiature)....if not just keep on asking and I or someone will try and help!

    Welcome to the messageboard!
    Mike

      Re: Columns based on dates

      Hi Mike
      Thanks for your information. I used the New Calculated Field on the report editor and entered the example code but got zeros. However reading the documentation on Tablesum I see there is a bit more to what I am after. I want the report to show for each account the total of all transactions for that account and show them in a format by month. I am using the transactions table because we use Classes in Quickbooks for each area(this will be my next step once I can do this). An example of what I am after is shown this in the attachment.
      I will attend the webinar if I can get round the time zones (I am in Melbourne Australia) and set it up in the office.
      You help is appreciated - David

        David,
        How you go about this depends upon a few things. Such as...are the figures already summarized in Quickbooks for your data in a field ? If so, a simpler function may serve you better such as a calculated field like the following for each month.
        Code:
        Mon10 = if(cmonth(txndate)="October",Amount,0)
        Could very well be a combination of this, the tablesum (or dbsum() ), and maybe even a summary operation.

          I Believe you are 15 hours+ my time which would put the webinar at 5am Friday for you. I do not know if I can make it this Thursday, but the organizer (Al Buchholz) can for sure put you on the right path if you show up.

            Thanks Mike – I will log in Fri 5 am although I’m not sure about the telephone connection at this stage.

            I could not get a valid expression from the calculate New using mon10=if(cmonth(txndate)=”October”,Amount,0) but if entered Amount=if(cmonth(txndate)="August",Amount,0) I got a valid expression and in my report if the month was August it returned a value of T and if it was not August it returned a value of F. Now what I want it to do is return the value of the amount, say $100, not just T. Slow progress for a newbie but I’m making some headway and your help is appreciated.

            Sorry the expression that returns a F or T is
            Mon8 = Amount=if(cmonth(txndate)="August",Amount,0) - not as above with Mon8 left out

              Not valid syntax...... you have 2 =

              I'm not sure why you get anything but an error. Interesting.. I see what is happening...

              I tend to use
              MonthNbr=month(txndate)
              Mon01=if(MonthNbr=1,Amount,0)
              Mon02=if(MonthNbr=2,Amount,0)
              .....same pattern for 3 to 9
              Mon10=if(MonthNbr=10,Amount,0)
              Mon11=if(MonthNbr=11,Amount,0)
              Mon12=if(MonthNbr=12,Amount,0)

                Hi Al and Mike,
                Thanks for you help and the webinar support was really great - you can teach an old dog new tricks. I can now do what the boss wants and get transaction data by month in columns. I can now also recommend the boss buys QReportBuilder.
