Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tableless web pages

    Hi,

I'm evaluating whether Alpha 5 meets my company's requirements for creating database driven websites. The most basic web pages that we would require consist of the following:
Page 1 should have a list of real estate properties from a Mysql database. Each property should link to page 2 and pass the property ID via some method (i.e. through the URL would be fine). Page 2 should display details and photos for the property that was clicked on from page 1. These details should not be formatted as a table, rather the content should be formatted as you would normally expect from a web page (ie. with paragraph tags and so on).

Now this is pretty basic stuff when using PHP but I can't figure out how to do something so basic in A5. Every tutorial I have found seems to be grid focused and that doesn't seem to be the right way to go. I have also found the tutorials on using XBasic to connect to my database but I can't seem to get those examples to translate to connecting my data to a web page. Clearly, I can't just drop that code into the HTML source within the <%a5 %> tags because I just get an error.

    So my questions are:
Is A5 the right tool for creating basic websites with database driven content?
If so, are there any tutorials or pages in the wiki that will point me in the right direction? (I feel like I'm drowning on that wiki and have spent hours trying to find relevant pages without luck!)

Any nudge in the right direction is appreciated.
    Thanks!

This should answer your questions about if it is possible.

The above is about how to create a blog but it has many of the features that you are looking for so it's a good example I think.

There is also some info on the above here in the forum if you search.

Basically, with a knowledge of CSS and doing freeform layouts you can make it look like pretty much anything you'd like.

      C,

Have a look at www.dalharttxmls.com and select "Listings" This is a "table" presentation, but it would be simple thing to present paragraph style information on a second or a pop up page.
This was created with V9 of Alpha, and more features are available now, of course. Click on the photos.

Also, look at www.asq-seattle.org and click on "view" in the event list (if one event can be called a list!) for an idea of what can be done.

The link that you sent, Jinx, looks to be my best lead. Unfortunately, in his video he doesn't share his CSS and I assume a few steps are missing because I'm not able to replicate his look.

.... but I'm getting a lot closer than I had been. The key is definitely using freeform layouts. I wish that there was a design specific document or tutorial video to highlight those features prominently because I had found no mention in 12 hours of reading and watching videos.

Observation : www.asq-seattle.org appears to have issues on my system (using Chrome).

Other than the Home page and the ability to view events, all the other tabs bring up blank pages.

I experienced no such problem using Chrome. I was able to navigate to each tab with success.

Yeah, you can duplicate the functionality or "nuts and bolts", as it were, with the info in the video but the look and css is not available. I was able to make use of it though and just create a design that I liked with only freeform layouts. I think the css in this case just makes it so you don't have to code the "look" into every freeform region. A code saving sub routine if you will. I personally haven't worked much with css so its something more for me to learn in the future.

Re: www.asq-seattle.org Ah! Never Mind! ...

I had just a small Chrome browser window open and each of the pages has a large chunk of white space at the top of each tabbed page, making it appear as if the pages are blank! Oops!
