Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    The Disappearing Browse?

    Hi all

I have a form based upon a set. Within this form is an embedded browse based upon the child records within that set.

I need to have the ability to move quickly through the child records making amendments as needed.

When amending data within a child record all seems to work fine until I move to the next child record and ALL child records then disappear? If I move to another parent record and back again the child records re-appear together with the changes already made?

Any thoughts or pointers greatly appreciated.

    Regards

I recall similar threads, try searching for one that matches the context in which you are seeing this.

If you see the same behavior using the 'default form' for the same set, I'd guess it's your video display adapter. Try updating the driver, and then possibly dialing down hardware acceleration. -- tom

      Tom

Thanks for the prompt response. I am fairly sure this is not a video driver issue but maybe a set structure problem? My earlier post did not fully explain the set structure. The browse is based on a second generation child table.

I have created a new set which strips out the first parent thus making the browse a first generation child and this seems to work. Not the ideal solution but works.

      Hope this makes sense?

        RE: The Disappearing Browse?

As a follow up to this issue which is still occuring, I have narrowed it down to the following scenario.

When moving through the parent records the embedded browse changes exactly as expected. If I then run a quick sort on the embedded browse, that works okay but as soon as I move to another parent record the contents of the embedded browse disappear and do not return unless I exit the form completely and go back in?

I presume this has something to do with the query that is created on the quick sort?

        Thanks

          RE: The Disappearing Browse?

The problem may be that the record pointers move. And you may have to experiment with different methods, but you can deal with it.

          parent
----1st child(is this an embedded browse, too)
--------1st child to 1stchild(embedded browse in question?)

I sometimes deal with these kinds of aggravations at the table level. But before, I offer a possible solution, verify that the above is correct.

            Martin

The browse is based on a 1:many child table for a specific parent. The attached image shows the form (work in progress) the browse on the left below the helmet logo is the parent table with the browse on the right being the child records.

the image didn't transfer, but I thought it was a 2nd generation child (grandchild?)

It was, I also re-did the set taking out the "first parent" still have the same problem. The second generation child scenario is the preferred option.

Try the image again it has uploaded okay.

                  RE: The Disappearing Browse?

well, if you are then only one using it, then get the current order for the form, and put it on a button to reset it. Otherwise, you could also experiment with putting it at the forms onfetch event. If you have "custom" navigation buttons, you could put it there. You may have to fiddle with it a bit.

                  glucosetests:Tables:glucosetests.order("invert(lasttime)")

above is a command that resets the order for the child table for a form

                      Hi Glen,

I have a solution for you.
I had exactly the same problems with my embedded browse, also based on a set.
It turned out that the effects dissapeared when you change the settings of the set.
Change the referential integrity setting to: cascade changes/deletes, and in my case the effects dissapeared at once.

                      Hope it helps you too.

                      Kind regards,

                      Marcel

Thanks for the suggestion, made the changes but still get the same issues ie: move to another parent record and the child records "disappear" however if I run a "quick sort" I get "record number is past end of table" message yet if I run the quick sort again the records appear!?

                          Glen,

do you want the browse object displaying the grandchild table records to always be sorted in one particular way?

The ability to sort by either shirt number order or name order is required.

Are you using an order expression in the set definition for the Grandchild link?
