Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Thanks to Frank and Mauricio for your response.
    One more reason to salivate.

Is alpha posting some videos about the coming desktop features in V10?
    Did I miss any?

It might be better to start a new thread w. your question, rather than tag onto this one where it will tend to get lost.

Well there are the new tabbed UI and page layout components, plus web grids are now so flexible you don't need to do much in the way of editing the .a5w page you put these components on. I prefer editing the HTML code directly on the page itself, and the preview features in grids are fantastic for v10 so this really cuts the need to use a third party tool for this.

demos of v10 apps created by Beta Tester - Peter Conway, Melbourne Australia

In the lease few weeks I have seen the future of affordable real time global data management for business and organizations of all sizes become a reality.

I have included some sample development pages (screen recordings are shown below) that have had no added programming skills in Java, AJAX or anything else need to do deliver a project.

Alpha Five Version 10 with its seamless use of Ajax is remarkable. So much so, I have stopped developing in V9 and have started the planning process to move all applications to the environment, these videos will show why.
V10 is truly an awakening of what is possible, now no longer do we see a grids as data, numbers managers, V10 provides a real time graphical experience in both development and daily use that is remarkable for a database, based product, V10 is going to change everything.

                Codeless AJAX
Client-side Formatting, Calculated Fields and Show/Hide Fields

The Grid component supports several powerful 'client-side' features such as calculated fields, dynamic formatting, dynamic show/hide of Grid elements and dynamic enable/disable of Grid elements.

The first video shows how you can define a calculated field. The calculation is performed using Javascript as soon as the value in one of the input fields changes.

The second video shows how you can dynamically style controls in the Grid. It shows how the Quantity field can be displayed in a different font and background color depending on what range of values it is in.

The third video shows how parts of a Grid form can be hidden under certain conditions. The Grid shown has a section for the billing address and shipping address. If the 'Shipping address is same as billing address' field is checked, the entire 'Shipping Address' part of the Grid form is hidden.

we have not yet - BUT we will!!
Richard- When exactly? The web side of things has been getting teasers for several weeks without a single thing on the desktop side. Many - including myself have voiced concerns on the message board that Alpha is not fully committed to the desktop applications. The silence regarding new features for it is deafening. Many of the current controls are in need of updating including control of their appearance and functionality to compete on a level playing field with competitor products. Most these concerns are from frustration as we all love the power and ease of Alpha5 that gets us 80 to 90% of where we want only to hit a brick wall over functionality that is standard in other products. I know we are seeking perfection unfairly as those other products have limitations of their own but it would be great to be able to totally wipe the floor with them. Especially with controls where 3rd party products cannot be used. For instance I have been unable to find a 3rd party tab control that will work with A5 offering a more modern and flexible control over it. If Alpha5 doesn't have the resources to improve the controls maybe it is time to work with a 3rd party company to develop them. There have obviously been issues with the browse and the tree function is very limited. As much as we want new super controls it is also important to ensure that the current ones are kept up to date. Why is there still no drag and drop feature after so many requests over the years. This type of feature is core in many modern (and not so modern) software applications. If you are developing anything that uses a calendar then the user is expecting to be able to drag and drop into it. With the ability to use drag and drop it opens the possibility of other types of applications that could be built with Alpha5. Maybe I will be surprised and all these things will be in V10.

I know this comes across as a negative response and I guess in some ways it is but it is born out of frustration knowing that Alpha is a good product but just falling short of being a fantastic product.

The desktop improvements in v10 are outlined below. They will be incorporated into the beta build in a couple of weeks and then there will be videos.

On the desktop side, Alpha Five v10 boasts a ton of incredibly powerful and productive features - including a completely new debugger that will boost productivity enormously, a slew of new and potent super controls, new Xdialog capabilities including Action Scripting generated Xdialogs, automatic backup (with rollback option) for your forms, reports and other layouts.

There's also a new style-sheet interface for setting the properties of any object on a form or report, which makes refining the look of your layouts much faster and more efficient. Plus with dynamic layout properties, you can easily change the appearance of controls and data automatically without using Xbasic. (E.g., make a dollar figure red if it is below zero, add alternating bands to reports, have buttons conditionally appear, etc.) There's much more including a Toolbox Builder - that allows you to design very modern interfaces into your desktop applications.

this Ajax preview is great stuff! Our team has been looking for this type of functionality V10 since our first web project in V9. We have been using the beta code as a test for a few month, comparing it to other open source tools, and there is very little comparison indeed.

Having worked with Alpha since 1991, during the single user DOS days, it is quite remarkable to see the evolution of the product line. If a circa 1992 word processor application had similar advances, it would be writing, emailing, and negotiating your business contracts for you!

Question: will V10 support multi-user application development?

Hey Richard, want to see something amazing.

Whats so important about this video? Well all images work the same, be it in desktop, web or reports, and they dont need to be published for web use straight from the server.

Oh! And if there is a delay in the video, it is not Alpha, it almost instant, its the Jing side of things.

Note the color text is conditional, as are the links and the PDF.

Codeless Ajax - Image Rich Example
Produced by Peter Conway - Alpha Five Customer and Beta tester. Melbourne Australia

Alpha V10, brings together all thats needed in one smart database application that does not require the developer or client to go to through the mill to deliver a presentable, professional and reliable web based application over the Internet at remarkable speed, and at the same time, deliver back office and desktop users access to the same data and system in real time.

I have attached a video of an application that has been developed in Alpha V10.

                              http://www.screencast.com/users/iGro...0-89814bd542c1

This was done without any manual code writing or even the need for any understanding of how a database or web applications works, just an understanding of logical methods and the ability to follow basic instructions, it was done in just minutes. Professional developers will see the WOW factor from the very first click, and then engage the more advanced options with even greater results.

The video gives focus to Alphas powerful image Reference Field type,(where your table simply points to the image file on your server) and presents it to the Browser just as it would if it were a character, date or number.

The video is brief, but shows several processes beginning with the grid builders field view. It switches to a Live Preview of the web page, and then runs the grid in the selected Browser.

The result is stunning; and the elements on the web page use just three of the functions available in the grid builder. The grid builder brings together a thumbnail, variable data with color settings (based on the data), a grid row expander to show a greater selection of images, and then another row expander to display the final larger images, then variable images or buttons to display (by inserting Special Controls again point and click) a web page if one exists, a PDF report if one exists.

It displays an internet web page from the table in an Ajax window, and an Alpha report in PDF format also in an Ajax window.

Again, these are all point and click Alpha V10 functions, and the use of Ajax is seamless in the development.

                              Peter Conway

Also here is a snippet of interactive live data entry and update over the Internet using just two of the many methods available in the grid builder.
