Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

The problem is not with the .a5w page in which the component is embedded. It is with the component itself. The .a5w pages remain when the component vanishes.

    My setup:

    Development:
Laptop w/ WinXP Pro, Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
    Symantec AntiVirus, Version 9
    Alpha5V7 , 3960_3018
    .NET 2.0

    Server:
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, Servise Pack 1
    Ahpha5V7 WAS , 3960_3018
    SQL Express
    .NET 2.0

Laptop and server setup with the same physical directory structure for A5WebRoot and Alpha7_db; therefore, I publish on laptop and copy entire directory(s) to server.

Backup each database with One-step tool in Alpha5 following a days work.

Yeah, but maybe the fact that Alpha blows out one thing under one condition is somehow related to this problem? Perhaps there is a link somehow?

The worst thing that the HTML Editor will do to a component is to remove it from a page, but it will not delete it.

          Edward,

I have to disagree with you on what you said above. I have experienced precisely the same issue on at least 6 to 7 occasions. It happened again this morning. A web component simply disappears from the list of Web Components. An .a5w page created with the component that has disappeared still shows the "icon" of the component. But, when you right-click on the component icon in the .a5w page and select Edit Component, an error message appears stating "Component Not Found: Default|missing component name."

This is a bug and it needs to be fixed.

Richard, Ed is not refuting what you say is happening. He is stating that it is not the HTML Editor. The behavior that Peter mentioned is entirely unrelated and has nothing to do with the disappearing components. Ed tried to clarify that instead of letting the discussion go off on a fruitless tangent.

              Lenny,

Fair enough. My mistake for not carefully reviewing each entry in the thread.

Does the software development team now recognize this as a known issue? (I apologize in advance if this has been previously answered.)

It is a known problem which we cannot currently duplicate. We are continuing to investigate it.

                  For what it's worth

I never had this as an issue UNTIL I opened the A5 HTML Editor, used the execute page lightning strike to EXECUTE the page (while still in the editor - so the focus of the mouse goes to the A5 desktop away from the editor) and exited. Now it does not happen all the time - but I did make it happen one-in-ten by just experimenting. Also my webpage componnent and my grid had the same names. - I hope this helps. Since not doing this process I have not lost a file. I also bet Steve does not use this function as he has never lost a file.

True, I've almost never used the lightning bolt; only obliquely know what it does. All of my components are named exactly (except for the extension) as the A5W pages (unless I have more than one component per A5W page). I'll try beating on the lightning bolt and see what happens. I think it opens my garage door.

The lightning bolt that eats the components, yet opens the garage door. Handy! :)

In the interest of helping identify the issue...

I use the lightning bolt extensively to test the performance of the web components I'm building. I typically use the Save Page button in the component builder to generate the associated .a5w page. Then, from the HTML editor, I use the Execute Page button (lightning bolt) to run the .a5w page in Firefox.

                          Re: Lost Components

                          I have the same problem.

Sometimes my complete publish profile is gone.
And sometimes all the a5w pages and components are gone while they are in the project folder.

This is very frustrating because have to create a new profile and add one by one the approx 80 components and pages.

                              Thanks for your input steve,

I've created a sort of workaround.
I've copied the whole webprojectfolder and gived the folder a new project name. Alpha saw the new project and all components/pages/images showed up in the list again.

This trick saved me a lot of time because I didn't have to add each file one by one.

                              Just a suggestion:
Maybe Alpha could improve the "add" function, by support adding multiple files at once.
The current "add" function can only add one file at once(images, components, pages).

If you are copying from one project to another, right click and select 'Copy to'. You can copy one file, all fiels, selected files to any project in the databse or another databse
