Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 V11 Running very slow

    Hello everyone,

I've just installed V11 and opened one of my V10 databases and it took forever to start up as well as to execute my reports. Just to make sure, I opened the exact same database with V10 and it just flashed up on the screen, no real delay at all. Ran several reports and likewise, they took less than 3-4 seconds to run (running against 1.5 million records).

Has anyone else noticed a slowness with V11? What can I do to make things speed up?

    Thanks,

    Ben

Possibly you excluded the v10 databases directories from your virus checker but didn't do so for the v11 versions?
    There can be only one.

Well the V11 WAS starts out at 140MB memory usage compared to V10 at about 80MB.

The V10 database is on a Department Share and I just started up V11 and opened the database from within V11. Nothing has changed in the DB, just the version of A5 that I'm using.

            I just tested on 2 V10 ADB's - one small and one large(570 tables, 462 forms, 275 reports, etc.)

The small one loads about 1.5 seconds slower in V11 than V10, but otherwise runs at the same speed when testing. The large one opens and runs with no appreciable difference in performance.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

Truly this question will have to be answered over a longer period of time. I recall with past new version, thing smoothed out and speed up over time. I don't know if that is from patches or my perception. I will be running load testing on v10 vs v11 applications later this year (as I convert a few from 10 to 11.) I will probably keep my analysis private, or between me and Alpha, but you can run your own load testing using various services, loadimpact.com being one.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

Can anyone be more specific of where V11 appears to be slower than V10? I am compiling a list for Alpha. At this point I cannot really tell for myself if there is any. At time is "feels" slower but I have not done any metrics or proper testing. One thing Lenny pointed out is there might be a difference between a native V11 component vs a V10-built component, running on V11. A lot of my work has been in this area, existing V10 components migrating to V11 and I know I have not gone into each component and made it dirty and saved fresh in V11.

                  what is a "V10 built-in" component? what is a V11 component? a layout? a script?

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

I should have said "built using" not "built-in" which has a different connotation. For instance I have several application that I am working on in V11. But the truth is that all of those were originally built in V10. I have a perception that it is slower when opening, for example, a large TabbedUI, it seems slower compared to my experience with V10. But I have not done the work to turn that perception in to any kind of fair and proper analysis. Because this is also important to Alpha, I want to do a little research on my own applications to see if any portions really are slower (or faster) in V11.

you can write a script to open every layout in design mode and then save it - which in theory would have them all compiled in V11 for testing.

Don't need a script, you go to Edit > Bulk > Turn On/Off Ajax. Toggle them off, toggle them on.
