Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Admit I did not notice I was in a Desktop discussion. How are you guys? Then same request, if anyone has specific desktop or web examples of where v11 might be performing slower....

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

I have opened every app(no testing) on a slow laptop win7 64 machine and experienced no noticeable speed loss. Done by opening in v10.5 first and then v11. I have not checked and usage of resources at this time. I will do more.

No, I don't think the web side and the desktop will give the same results. I appreciate Steve's percieved/or position of helping alpha on desktop. We all will do the same and I suspect they are watching a this thread themselves since it is a beginning. The webside knowledge is useful to us too. It can give a clue to some new/or programming parts they have started that may affect both. I would be appreciative of knowing the results as much as anyone.

I hope I put that diplomatically enough!

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

The current version of the CSDA DiagInfo for Alpha Five (version 1.17) has 2 measurements of XBasic speed, as well as reporting on a variety of info regarding the environment of Windows, PC Hardware, Memory, and Alpha Five.

Since it is free for use, it can be used as a reference by all.

Over time the product will add additional benchmarks and information to help better qualify various differences between systems to aid in diagnosing issues between systems.

The two speed benchmarks give a rough idea of the speed of the XBasic code execution, and of overall speed

A note for those installing on Vista or Win 7 with UAC on:
Right-click on the EXE installation file, and select Run as Admin

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

For what it is worth I see no slowdown in three desktop applications last redeveloped in V10 and two last redeveloped in V9. If anything they run better in V11 although this may be less a matter of the specific applications than a consequence of how Ver. 11 runs on my Win7 64 bit system in contrast with V10.5 or V9.

However I have no formal testing to back up these observations.

              Hi Martin,

The sociology is more or less over with; retired (after 40 yrs!) and moved to Toronto--all good. Oddly the weather is great up here. For the last two years all the messy stuff has been south of the border with a case in point being the current east-coast debacle. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day here. In 10 years Texans may be enjoying their beachfront condos in artic Canada.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

Just for the record, I am not suggesting that everything you have done in V10 should be resaved in V11 in order for it to perform properly. I am trying to determine if there is an apples-to-apples comparison: code created in V10 that is then run under both V10 and V11. If there is, and it is slower, we want to pinpoint the cause and do what we can to resolve it.

                  Thanks Lenny
As regards the desktop/LAN/TS and dbf's, my own testing shows no appreciable difference. Not sure if the person originally posting this thread was referring to DBF's or other.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

Hi all, sorry for being out of the loop on this, have been out of pocket. The DB is a straight forward application, I do not have any coding other than what is generated by A5. It is just 4 tables that are linked. What I have experienced is that opening, executing (selecting a report) and getting the report out of V10.5 is faster than V11. I am not doing any fancy manipulations, calculations, etc. Everything is pure, meaning just table look-ups for the results based on a report filter or no filter at all.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

Would suggest zipping the database and sending it to Lenny. Be sure to give him explicit instructions for duplicating the issues. That way he can compare 10 and 11, and diagnose.

Re: A5 V11 Running very slow

I just did some timing between starting up the DB in V10.5 vs V11 and executing my largest report which results in 2,529 pages of output. Here are the times I got:

                        V10.5 - Starting Up - 3:488 seconds
                        V10.5 - Generating the report - 13:811 seconds

                        V11 - Starting Up - 15:171 seconds
                        V11 - Generating the report - 8:651 seconds

I can't really share the DB since it has Student information, i.e., SSN, College Number, Name, Address, etc. against College Policy.

So its the startup that is the culprit - not the report generator. Are you starting each one at least 3 times, and then taking the last number. The first time (after a reboot, especially,) there is no cache, after 3 startups of the same app, the cache makes it load faster - so do it 3 times for each one.

Yes, it is upon start up. Yes, Actually I timed it 5 times each and then averaged the times to get the numbers I posted.

I might take a bit of work but you can mask the data. Copy the database and run an operation to delete data from lastname, SSN etc. to create a sanitized copy.

V10.5 Startup on a SSD is less that 2 seconds.
This does presume that V10.5 has been run in the recent past however as I have a slow down when the Seagate Backup drive has to power up.
