Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

And if you don't use the Alpha installer?

Then you can expect problems, because it works with the development product you are using. It's free, it's simple, and proven. I have been a software developer for 50 years and I have learned one thing, keep it simple, don't look for problems.

Suggest you search for Astrum, which is a popular alternative to Alpha's installer.
With the KISS logic you suggest, I presume you have views on the mixing of Memo Fields and Data Fields in a Table?
Looks simple 'till it bites you.
Not everything is as simple as following the implied instructions and this forum is about sharing experiences and discussion about many ways of doing things.
I hope that you will accept help and dialog when you need it, but it sounds like your experience might make that unnecessary.

You obviously have 10 more years of experience with A5 than I do and I always accept help and dialog when needed with A5 and anything else. You can never have too much experience. With my limited experience in A5, I have not used Memo fields, obviously there must be a problem. I have mixed emotions on the forum. In the beginning it was helpful, but questions I have asked lately are not answered. They are viewed, but no comments. Even a comment on it being a stupid question would be accepted. I am too old to get involved in the complexity of a lot of that is available in A5.

I really doubt that folks on the Forum are deliberately ignoring you Kenyon, and no question is a "stupid question".
It may be that a response is not possible due to lack of information - it isn't always easy to describe a problem which can be replicated quickly.
There are a few questions which are asked where contributors are happy to spend hours trying out solutions. Other questions more personal to the user are less exciting - like getting the Alpha/MySQL connection syntax correct.
This Forum isn't a help desk so much as an experience sharing medium.
Apologies if I seemed a little abrupt, but RTFM isn't always appropriate.
And you are never too old. The demographics of the users in the Desktop side reflect this.
I've been fiddling with computers and systems nearly as long as you and only recently trying the WAS side out using SQL.

I have find the forum extremely useful by just reviewing other questions that may be of interest to me. But I recently hit a problem writing Xbasic where I ran out of room writing. I asked the simply question, is there a place to increase the buffer size. A simply answer of no you can't would have been sufficient. I have been trying to find a way to put a button on individual line in a grid to display a map, which is simple in a desktop. No answer. I recently found a video how to it when they released the video for the new Feature Packs, but it was for V10. I attempted to replicate in V11, but options in Supercontrols where not the same. I kept getting a Window frame error, which gave me an option to try, which actually was nice, as it gave address and picture of site. However, it did not work when posted to website, only localhost. I put details of what I did on forum and got not hits. Alternate view works fine if you have longitute and latitude, but multiple errors if you just try to use address. You would think the experts at A5 would know the solution, as I ahve seen them give solutions to a lot of more complex questions.

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say. Are you suggesting that there is some strange mysterious conspiracy where people on this board are deliberately not answering your questions, but answering everyone else?

There are cases when I have a question and then think about it and figure it out and come back and say never mind, I worked it out. Or I will find a work around, when I get no response. But I have asked twice about Google map on button on a grid line and have had no response, so, yes, I am starting to get paranoid. I know you have been one person providing the most help. With my limited experience I have actually given some solutions, so I am not going to avoid the forum, as it is tremendous help to a lot of people and I find solutions to questions I have not come across yet.

I suppose if you have a number of unanswered posts you might wonder if it's bad breath or something. But you surely must know that this is just coincidental. Scroll though some of the forums and you will see other unanswered posts. I just counted 5 unanswered posts from yesterday in the v11 web and none were yours. It just happens that way sometimes.

I agree, as I see the same thing and I realize a few of mine may appear to be obvious, and that when I quickly come back and indicate I found solution. See A5V11 Web/Browser, page 2 date 3-1-2012 11:31 am . What more info do I need to provide. Have had 11 views, which is not a lot, so either not a lot of people think this is a nice feature to have or the solution is too obvious.

Kenyon, I use the Google Maps feature as well as other Super Controls in the DeskTop (DT) side.
I believe that the problem is the ability of the WAS side to drop an example onto the Forum for someone to fiddle with, however I need to look at how this can be done.
In DT Forum, it's easy to drop an example - just Tables or the whiole zipped Database.
The example you quote would require someone who is interested enough to build and try it out so as to provide an answer and while I have the time at present, I don't have the knowledge yet to suggest a meaningful solution.
A number of my posts have been "blanked", and I suspect it's no so much a sign of disinterest as having nothing constructive to say on the matter.
You will bump into Stan Mathews on the Forum who is, like many here, extreemly knowledgible. He is also very direct so the answers you get might be a short piece of working code and nowt else! No time wasting - just the answer.

                          Peter,

Thanks for feedback. I was hoping the person whole put together the video for V10 might see it. One would think the gurus at A5 would have the solution, as I see they provide a lot. I think this is a nice marketing point in an application, as as is Alternate view, in spite of Google errors, which are corrected with proper co-ordinates. However, this requires a lot of downloading from Google site and modifications to databases with addresses.
Google wants addresses with commas between address, city, st, zip, which is logical, but not how addresses are normally stored in a database.

I'm not the hall monitor but it seems to me that this discussion has drifted way off topic. Why not continue in an existing thread that discusses these things, or even better, begin a new thread? Otherwise, when you come up with something helpful folks searching for it later are going to have to wade through 4 pages of messages that have nothing to do with what you are now discussing. Thanks.

creating a custom menu is working now. it was broken for about 5 days and we are sorry about that. however, all that you had to do was roll back to a previous update. all previous updates are available from the downloads page.
