Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Robert,
Unless you have to be connected to the inter/intranet at all times, I see no problem with turning Anti-Virus off---simply disconnect your inter and intranet cables and test...complete isolation is 100% effective against Virus/hacking attacks!

You should be able to setup A5 as a trusted application.

KAS2010 Settings->Threats and exclusions->Exclusions[Settings] box->Trusted Application tab->+Add-> browse for the A5 exe and you should be able to turn off all monitoring

aRob, Alpha Five is and always has been a TRUSTED APPLICATION in Kaspersky.

What you suggested sounds like turning off ALL protection for Alpha Five. I'm not sure I want to do that, I thought the idea was to exclude only the data dictionary files from being scanned.

Re: .$$M Files Creating A5 Chaos!

            Hi Al:

It was nice hearing from you. It appears as if you're post about A5 wanting exclusive use to the data dictionary files that Kaspersky was simultaneously scanning, was the issue. That simultaneous use of the same files apparently corrupted the data dictionary files which caused those extremely frustrating "Compact Database" problems that were driving me crazy. At this point in time I cannot say that with complete certainty, but it is a pretty good guess.

Walter responded to my question in the Ver 10 Desktop forum and advised that when he switched to a different Anti-Virus application, his problem disappeared. Here's my response to him.

            Hi Walter:

Thanks for the feedback, it is very much appreciated.

Since I posted that message, I went to the Kaspersky User Forum where they recommended some changes to how Alpha Five interacts with Kaspersky 2010. So far, those modifications apparently resolved the Compact Database issue. It's far too early to declare victory, but I'm going to watch it carefully and see if that was in fact a permanent resolution.

Based upon your experience and my similar problems, it appears as if Kaspersky 2010 was in fact the cause of our compacting issues. Walter, that's somewhat bizarre to me because I've been using Kaspersky for at least two years and never once had a problem until I upgraded to version 2010.

Re: .$$M Files Creating A5 Chaos!

For the record and to help anyone else who has the same problem, here's the suggestions I received from the Kaspersky User Forum. It's almost identical to what "aRob" suggested.

                1. Run Alpha Five

                2. In Kaspersky, click Settings - ThreatsAndExclusions - (exclusion) Settings - Trusted Applications

                3. Add - Applications... select the Alpha Five software exe file (should be near the top of the list) and check all of the boxes.

                4. Click OK.

Repeat the process if there is more than one Alpha Five file in the Applications list.
                -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                for .DDM files.

If the above does not work (adding to Trusted Applications)

In Kaspersky, click Settings - FileAntivirus,

if "scan files by format" was checked, select the "scan files by extension".

If "scan all files" was checked, then select "scan files by format".

Re: .$$M Files Creating A5 Chaos!

Thanks for this info. I had added A5 to the trusted app list at work but not at home. And sure enough the culprit was Kaspersky. Thank goodness I checked here before panicing...

                    Robin,

I'm so glad my post helped save you some heartaches.

I've been using Kaspersky for a long time and never once had a problem with Alpha Five or any other application. That's what made troubleshooting so bizarre and difficult to analyze. How can you blame an application that worked flawlessly for such a long period of time? But in the end, that was the cause of my problem. Thankfully Kasperksy also has an excellent user support forum.

I think it may have something to do with a recent update on KAV 2010 - because it hadn't happened since Jan 2010 until now.

Thank you all for this information and particulary the Kaspersky Settings. That did the trick. I had tried every other possible way to address this.
So it is a combination of Windows 64-Bit (Vista in my case) and the version of Kaspersky 2010.

                        This is a big relief!

                        Best regards,
