Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: What's wrong with A5V4 ?

    No sweat, no gain ?

Ok, Im just getting wet, writing a mailing/customer info database
to get acquainted with object oriented prog.
After that will come the heavy apps like inventory and manufacturing
    and workshop maintenance apps.
My Foxpro app is over 20,000 lines long, so you can imagine the anguish
at the thought of having to do it all over again.
One reason I selected A5V4 was the compatibility of the data structure including the memo fields, plus the bonus of having a good picture field.
Your story is heartwarming in the sense that I'm NOT a fulltime programer, my job is designing jewelry ! ( pictures available by request, for the missus' eyes only !)

I'll keep in touch as I drown !

    Thanks,

    Harold

      Hi Harold,

Was that "life" or "laugh" ?

This has little to do with the original post but then, maybe not.

If we can't go through life w/o laughing at ourselves, it's going to be a boring life! I know a couple of folk whom I worked with for 10 years, one has never cracked a smile and I've never seen either one laugh. Now tell me, how much fun is that?

If there was a contest for the dumbest and funniest things we have done, oh boy.... Now that would make interesting reading; if you could get through it w/o splitting a gut.
Humor, even at my own expense; I need it to get through the frustration.

            RE: What's wrong with A5V4 ?

            Harold,

I too have felt frustrations with A5. I started with A4 and had several apps developed that worked extremely well. Along came Win9x and several clients started using it, the you couldn't get a new computer without ans so on.

Well, my apps still worked, but clients wanted a windows based app that could grow with the operating system so I started with A5V1. I cursed it for a long time because I no longer had what I considered simple features that made app development rather simple. I had to learn this thing called xbasic and it drove me nuts. Then A5V2 came out and I had to revise my V1 cuz of the changes. When V3 came out, I almost cried and did not use it. Finally, V4 came out and I became happier and have converted all but 2 apps (working on them now) to V4.

The point is, no matter what the product is, be it Access, Foxpro, Oracle, Alpha 5, etc. you will always find quirks and comments. That is why there always new versions coming out. However, you will not find the technical support and technical expertise on any of the other products that you find with Alpha Software and this forum. Do you think that Bill Gates would get on an Access forum and admit that a problem you submitted and they were able to duplicate is a bug? Heavens no, but I have seen Selwyn do this. Do you think that the big time Oracle programmers will hop onto a forum and answer questions no matter whether the question is from a beginner or advanced programmer? I think not.

Alpha software products and the people who use them are like a family. No question worth asking is stupid. In this forum I have seen the same (worded differently of course) questions asked by beginner and advanced users alike, and receive answers without ridicule because it was so simple or naive.

Turn your question around and ask 'What's right with A5V4' and then compare it with what the others have to offer and you will find there is more right with A5 than the others have.
