Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dick:

Thanks for your comment. Perhaps I should learn from your experience, and go with the Home Edition. The cost is reasonable enough.

RE: Upgrade Costs with A5, Home Edition

        Selwyn:

I apologize for my offensive comment. While I have used Alpha Four for many years (Versions 1.1 - 6.1) and I was able to create usable business applications within a month after acquiring Version 1.1, I have never reached the same level of comfort and competance with Alpha Five. Therefore, I could not really evaluate what Alpha Five, Version 5 and the Home Edition have to offer. I focused on what the Home Edition did not have.

I will install the free trial version and work with that for a while. I am sure that I will acquire a much better idea of what I want and need after that.

Several users have suggested that the Home Version may be all that I need.

        Best regards.

RE: Upgrade Costs with A5, Home Edition

          Tom-

Perhaps I can explain for Arthur.

          Two cases:

          1. Suppose I am a current owner of A5V4. I have two choices now. I can buy HE for $99 or upgrade to Full Edition for $299. If I buy HE now and later learn I need the Full Version, the HE investment is lost as I still have to pay the $299.

          2. Suppose I currently own nothing. I buy HE for $99 and then learn I need to have the Full Edition. Now I have to pay $349 as there's no credit for the HE purchase.

A logical (to the consumer) answer is to credit him with perhaps 80% of the $99 towards the Full Edition version in whichever mode is correct. IOW, not an upgrade from HE to Full but rather to grant partial credit for the purchase of HE for the appropriate FE version one eventually buys. This means:

If I'm a Version 4 owner I would pay an additional $219 ($299 less 80% of $99...say $80). My total cost to get to the Full Edition is $318 because I stopped off at HE. I'm paying just a bit more for the upgrade from V4 to V5 because of the overhead costs of making two sales, the extra CD and packaging, etc. etc.

If I'm not a Version 4 owner, I would pay an additional $269 ($349 less 80% of $99..say $80). My total cost would be $368. Again the extra cost covers the cost of the extra sale.

Adjust the credit percentage up or down a bit if 80% doesn't cover the second sale cost. Allow the upgrade only if the HE disc is returned. Either or both work. The key thing is to provide for an upgrade path. Right now the product risks being seen by consumers as a dead end because they are assuming 100% of the risk.

Having said all of that, I've just purchased 2 copies of HE. My days of writing code are long behind me. I only ever did that because I needed code to do things that today A5V5 does with a menu click. Since I don't write for anyone else, the HE vs. FE crisis has been overcome by events. The problem really is one of perception....what am I not going to be able to do? The reality is that the answer is.....not much. If husband and wife need to share a database in the home over an Ethernet LAN with full record locking....maybe they need to consider FE. Othrwise, HE will probably work nicely and the user will never bump into the limitations.

          Eric

PS: The really interesting questions will surround an HE edition for Version 6....A5 Home Edition Version 2? Upgrade cost?
