Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Hopefully this will work! The problem is evident in the Orders form, click on New order, choose a Customer then try and change the name or address.

Candy, your form is based on a set of tables. We can't open the form until you give us all the tables involved in the set and their indexes and dictionaries. Alpha is telling me that the Products table is missing. Perhaps others are as well, can't say.

Please do this. Before uploading the next collection of files, copy them to a new empty folder on your machine and try to open the database there first. If you can't open it and examine the form in question we won't be able to either.

Strange, I did just that, tested it before uploading and it worked fine. Here is another zip with some more files. I had to split into 2 zips. Should work with files from 1a.zip and 1b.zip

              Re: Allow Edits

OK I see the problem. On your development system you've got some tables located in a different folder than the database. e.g. The Company table is in your A5v5_OrderEntry folder, and is missing from the zip file you uploaded. Splitting tables among multiple folders makes the database very very difficult to move elsewhere and is therefore almost never recommended.

Sorry, can't help you til you get us a complete copy of the database.

              [ Later on ]

The Company table helped. Can open form at last.

              [ Still later ]

But your field rule table lookup is broken because it's pointing to the wrong folder.

I am not able to open the zip file either, but I have an inkling on what Candy is referring to and I belive it is a bug.

To change the customer detail, I found myself having to delete the existing data first with the delete button to allow the "Edit" icon to activate and later save. I am not sure if that's what she is referring to or something else, but I think it's a bug and I was too lazy to report it.

Candy, I don't see any fields from the Customer table in your layout. I guess I don't understand the problem yet. In the Orders table your have a table lookup field rule to permit the user to retrieve field values from the Customer table. These are stored in various fields in other tables displayed on your form (like the Ship to address fields, etc.). But I don't see any fields from the Customer table itself in your layout. This means I don't know how or why you're trying to edit Customer names and addresses through this form. More details please.

                    Tom-
Sorry for taking so much time! On the Orders form, everything under "Bill to" is a field from Customer: Company, Address1, Address2, etc. The addresses under "Ship to" are not from the Customer table. After I choose a Customer, the Company, Address, etc. are filled in. If I'm in the Company or any of the other Customer fields under Bill to, I first need to hit F3 then I'm able to make a change. If I don't hit F3, then all Customer fields are blank.

                      Hi Gabriel-
I just tried that and it doesn't do the trick either. The only way I can edit, it seems, is if I hit F3 first. If that's all I can do, I'll have to make sure my users know they need to press F3 first (which isn't instinctive).

                        Candy,

Using A5v7 Build 4130-3033 I'm sorry to say that I cannot reproduce the problem. I had to re-route the table lookup field rule for the CustomerID field in the Orders table so that it pointed to my database folder. Otherwise no changes were made.

                        I opened the Orders form.
I began a new Order using your button.
                        I looked up a customer.
                        I saved the record.
I then edited the address field from the customer table, and saved it. I did not have to press F3 in order to begin editing.

                        I'm running XP Pro, sp2.

                        Sorry I could not help.

I am sorry I am not able to open your zip file and evidently Tom is having similar problems with that. If you can not get the help you need, you might want to report it as a bug.

                            Hi Tom and Gabriel-
Thanks for all of your effort. I did exactly what you did Tom, first saved the record before changing the Company info and that worked! I never saved the record first. I just wanted to pull the company info up and then change and go ahead with the rest of the order. So, it's that simple, I have to save it first? Strange. I purchased this Order Entry app and have made massive changes to it for our own business. I saved a copy of the original app and when I did the same thing, New Order, chose a customer and then tried to change the company address, it worked fine. I didn't have to save first. I didn't see any difference in my updated app.

                            Thanks for all your effort!

                              Candy,

Even though your form is based on a set of tables, Alpha Five stores the data in separate tables, not in the set itself. In your case the Orders table is the primary table in the set design. Your form's tab order begins with fields from the Orders table. It's advisable to save the parent (primary) record before beginning work on any linked child table records.

Incidentally, it's not necessary to include the fields from the Customer's table in order to populate the shipping fields you need. The Customer table could be dropped from the set and your table lookup field rule would still work just fine. Many designers would design the app so that edits for the Customer's table would occur on a different form, not using the Order entry form itself for this. Your needs may be otherwise of course.

Whenever I see a complex data entry form like yours I'm reminded of Dr. Wayne's article "Simplify your Application for Better Performance" at www.learn alpha.com. If you're not familiar with it I highly recommend you study it.

Thank you so much Tom. I will be sure to read that. (By the way, I have other connections to the Customer table other than just that one field lookup, so I think need to keep it in the set).

                                THANK YOU!!
