Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Hi Dave

Well they promote the fact that they have international customers using their services. So if they have clients in the EU then for those companies to be operating within the regulations over here then they have to take "reasonable steps" to ensure that they comply with the principles of data protection regulations. The US equivalent of data protection is Safe Harbor and the conversations I have personally had with the Information Commissioner (Official Dept that ensures compliance over here) have indicated that using services that follow and comply with Safe Harbor is "taking reasonable steps" To give you an idea of why I take this seriously , there is a well documented case here where a sole trader lost his laptop on a train. The laptop contained client sensitive data and I am not talking about credit card info. He was originally fined 80,000 (about $120.000)

Yes I understand that for testing only that may not be an issue but I am not about to sign up to a vps where I will need to add an application server licence and just use it for testing. I have far more effective ways of doing that on my current vps's

When it comes to data protection I treat it like I do drinking and driving. I don't do that at all and testing or otherwise I will only use servers that are EU based or comply with Safe Harbor if outside the EU.

Yes I agree that it looks to be a great price, but like everything in business price is just one factor to be considered

        Kind regards

        Glen

            Re: Cheap vps?

Although I will find out more on Tuesday, I am finding the rules about CVV are a little more squishy than noted in the credit card merchant agreements. The agreements I read definitely say that storing (not using STORING) the CVV is forbidden. But in practice, at least with my one American Express contact, they say (I am paraphrasing), "can't do much about it if a merchant stores the CID", and then a combination of "online buyer beware, use the merchant if you are comfortable with them", and "don't worry, we will completely cover you if some fraud does take place".

The way the CVV is supposed to work, based on my integration using several payment gateways (PayPal, Chase/PaymentTech, Authorize.net) is that the CVV can be asked for (doesn't have to be asked for, depends on how you set up your payment integration) and is used to validate the card is "in-hand". The transaction is made between merchant and payment gateway and then the CVV is to be forgotten, not stored. If it helps, think of the CVV as your Debit Card's PIN. You would not expect your bank to ever have that number stored along side your Debit card number because if your records are hacked, the hacker gets all (or at least more of) the keys to your kingdom.

CVV is supposed to validate the card is in your hand. That is the intended purpose, so I cannot imagine why any payment processing would store that code, including PayPal (when a credit card is used). I will call PayPal on Tuesday as well, because I am curious about that.

It is all in the way you read them. The real problem is that amex and other CC's do not make a dime unless people use them. That really puts them in a spot because they need the business to continue doing it.
I can remember us shutting off one of the cards( I am sure we were not the only ones) because they had the highest rates and were getting slow to pay. When a vendor sells an oil change for 25.00 and the CC tackes 4% and holds the money back for a week, they lose business. That was Diners Club at the time. We later started using them again after they fixed their problems. They were still the most expensive.
Oil change cost to dealer is about 21.50 for materials and labor, so 4% eats deep into that. The others at from 2% to 3% are more liveable.

The other one that credit CC's say not to do is to charge the fee to the client, but think of the guy wanting to buy a 5000.00 car on a credit card that has a 2.5% fee. It usually won't happen without that fee being added in somewhere.

                1) Your best attitude was to blast the guy.
                2) You went on to get a Webkeeper's subscription not to really see if they were any good, but to dig out anything even the slightest detail that's wrong with them and splash it around. Typical Alpha user attitude; anything that's not Alpha or Alpha blessed is garbage. You have been eating Alpha5 for so long that your digestive system cannot process any other type of food. Obviously you have nothing else to do than reporting hosting companies; don't do it for free though, at least get paid for your findings. Whatever you do, I am confident my 2 servers will be on next week and the week after an next year and years after that.
Good lord Gaby, where did this come from? Get up on the wrong side of the bed? Maybe not quite "wild and reckless" but at the very least totally uncalled for. Just my opinion.

If I understand right the current agreement do not satisfy EU anymore and US has until summer 2014 to repair problems in agreement or the mechanism will be suspended.

I know David started with Cheap VMs. I am using this company at: http://www.softsyshosting.com/windows-vps.aspx and it works with A5 as well with no problem. You may check into it.

It looks to me like hosting in vps is coming down now. I have thought it was too high in the past. In fact, way overpriced.

So I did finally get my Webkeepers.com server up.

Well Dave, cheap VPS - I was with you all along! ( = don't kill me). I was able to set up AAV12, Navicat, Mysql, AlwaysUp, FileZilla and the other utilities I use, and publish an AAV12 application from my desktop to the server and run it fine.

I was so angry at myself for acting like a knowitall on this thread that I made a contribution at sparkprogram.org which provides mentoring to youths in my area. I felt I needed to do something to offset my behavior here.

It is no big deal to me. It is just a lesser expensive alternative to some others. I looked at some of their offerings, knowing that the base will not be enough for "hungry" apps and they seem pretty well priced as too.

I could have used the 250.00??? LOL

One place I've found good deals on leased servers (non vps, fully dedicated) is here
                              http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36

Generally with these ones you have to do most of the configuration yourself, you get a Windows server and Admin login and that's about it for the price offered.

At the extreme end of the price spectrum there are full dedicated windows servers going for as cheap as $29/month (bring your own windows license key)

The only reason I mention it is because currently I have one windows VPS I pay $29 a month for and looking at that link above I can get 10x the disk space and twice the ram and dedicated CPUx2 for the same price... just have to decide if it's worth the hassle to migrate a server...

(previously I've found deals for BSD/Linux servers on webhostingtalk, currently I have 3 with WebNX)
